From what I’ve heard the term “swashbuckler” can be attributed to swordsmen who sounded off their rapiers on their beltbuckles to intimidate their opponents. No pirate ever carried a shield to a raid. It’s some sort of ritualistic ballyhoo. A mix of banging the drum and blowing your trumpet at the same time, of talking trash and psyching out your enemy. But, Comebacker Tim, what it really takes for the making of a swashbuckler, is best summed up by the old baseball saying: “It ain’t braggin’, if you can back it up.”
