Russian Here, Russian There

An EFB Four Score Anniversary News Report

Harrison Carroll – Los Angeles Evening Herald Express – June 15, 1937

Another weekend party, the Basil Rathbones’, was enlivened by all the stellar guests doing impromptu turns at entertaining. Marlene Dietrich really startled the cinema folk with a Russian dance. Errol Flynn, who knows not a word of the language obliged with a Russian song.

Party was a surprise celebration for Rathbone and all the guests hid their automobiles a block away.

Funny GIF of Errol. I think he had a great talent for comedy. I remember seeing him in Don’t Bet On Blonds, and he was very funny. Even thought his part in that movie was small, I was riveted to the screen because he was such a pleasure to watch.

I agree completely, his timing and delivery are underrated. One of my favorite of his films is NEVER SAY GOODBYE with Eleanor Parker, I feel like most people haven’t seen that side of him.

Thanks. I didn’t know about that movie. It looks just like the type of subtle comedy Errol was so good at.

        FlynnBaztic research, habitatheinz!

The Rath of Hollywood’s home definitely served a duel purpose for the Baz of Baker Street.

Here are Baz and Baron, beginning and ending their Blood soaked partnership:

Despite what Errol utters at the end of their Three Arches duel, that was a partnership we should all be thankful for – the greatest duelists in cinematic history.

Errol knew how to party like a Russian, Nastrovje Tim. Remember he employed a valet named Alexandre at Mulholland Farm.

We need to be very careful discussing Mother Russia, Comrade Heinz. We could end up on Wikileaks (Hola Julian), or, worse yet, being subpoened by Judge Mueller for hacking the election.

Hopefully, the mention of Suicide Freddie should balance things out.

Yes, Alex Pavlenko, the Master of Mulholland’s Man Friday, bought away from Big Mac McEvoy and paid both by check and with leftovers – another character in the amazing cast of characters in the ultra-amazing life of Errol Flynn.

p.s. shangheinz. inspired by all this russian reportage and communist cuba again in the news here in soflo, I drove to the russian baths on miami beach today, via a stop on the mainland to speak with a lovely lady who knew errol and his entourage in habana quite well, including bev, sep, and select others.

Flynntastically, Errol had been surrounded by a swarm of revolutionary Russians only a week earlier as a British agent at the lux Radio Theater. These 1917 Ruskies included Frances Farmer who “came to Hollywood from Seattle, via Russia – with a quite convincing Bolshevik accent, I’d say.” You can listen in from 2:00 to 4:25

Our Man David has previously transcribed and decribed Cecil B. DeMille’s sensational intro of Errol in British Agent:

Errol Flynn Radio Shows… Streaming Audio!

The Lux Radio Theatre. June 7, 1937. CBS net. “British Agent”. Sponsored by: Lux. Romance and adventure with an English diplomat in Moscow during the Russian Revolution. De Mille makes a mistake during the final interviews and gets the name wrong during a film plug.

He also announces the death of Jean Harlow “a few hours ago.”

DeMille describes Errol … “Captain of a trading schooner in the South Seas, a descendent of Fletcher Christian, an officer in charge of native Constabulary, a pearl and coral fisher, a beachcomber, and a member of England’s boxing team in the 1928 Olympics. For a time in Australia, he was also a bottle smeller. Once he led a film expedition to New Guinea where the natives were headhunters and they shoot him in the ankle.”

“Returning to New Guinea to dig for gold, made a small fortune. And quickly spent it- bought a boat and, with three friends, duplicated the voyage made by Captain Bly of the Bounty up the inner passage of the Great Barrier Reef from Sydney to the South Seas. Back in Australia, had his first taste of picture acting, made a second film in England and was soon on Warner Brothers’ payroll. He has written one book and many short stories.”

“Recently, Flynn had spent several weeks in the battle front of Spain. Shells exploding over his head and machine gun bullets whining past – was pretty frightening. He was convinced of one thing: That is, that the only cause, in the world today, worth fighting for, and that every man and woman should fight for, is the cause of peace.” A large caliber shell burst about 50 yards away and was hit on the head by falling debris and suffered a concussion for several days.”
