Errol heading your way

18 Jul

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

I came across a rather curious item of Flynn memorabilia.

A bronze of Errol`s head is to be auctioned off at INVALUABLE:
www.invaluable.com…

It is however a very accurate replica of the facial features of the golden bad boy of Hollywood.

Makes me wonder if Flynn had it commissioned himself or if Sam Peckinpah was behind all this.

Furthermore who took up the assignment?

Heads up,

— shangheinz

The same plaster bust? But tilted upwards?

And from Jack & Louise Marino’s famous Errol Flynn Centennial Party:

Hey, it does look like the same bust, but tilted upwards! David, the hair swirl above the forehead in the picture you posted looks the same as the front view of the bust at the INVALUABLE web sight. That bronze paint makes it a little hard to compare the two busts, but the hair swirl is kind of like a fingerprint, and it matches.

The busts aren’t too bad either, they definitely look like him.

According to this web sight – sites.google.com… – it was made by Bob Lyons.

Thank for the heads up, bronzheinz. Great find!

Per David and Tony’s excellent ensuing input, it appears there may be an “octagonal” angle involved in the creation of this bronz (plated?) bust.

This is my Errol Flynn bust that I had made from an original Warner Bros bust that they would use for creating beards. This was made from Errol’s face when he had a life mask sitting to this. Warners did this to all their stars.

Errol got one that has been in Jamaica since he lost Mulholland Farm. The other one that survived ended up in the prop department on the Warner lot. That is when Deirdre Flynn had seen it when she was working in the prop dept. She felt it was her father’s and it ended up in her home since the 70s. Around the late 2000s she decided to sell it through Christies and Lincoln Hurst bought it. I went to pick it up and kept it in my home for over a year. It was during that time I asked Linc if i could make my own copy from his/warner original. I had a friend that was a special FX make-up artist and he would do it if I paid for the cost of the materials. At the time I was in-between jobs and I asked a good friend and fellow Flynn guy Greg Maradei put up the money and we had three made. When Linc passed away, someone broke into his home and must has stolen the bust he got from Deidre.

If you search for Arnella Flynn on the blog you will see the colour photo of her sitting next to the bust

Thanks Maria! So the one with Arnella in the picture, that you found, must very likely have been the one Errol had in Jamaica. All the other ones seem to have slightly different hair than the Jamaica bust, so they may be copies of the one Dierdra liberated from WB. Of course, one of the busts out there could conceivably be the one Dierdra had, if it wasn’t destroyed.

Edit: Following Maria’s lead I located another picture of Errol’s bust. This time it is surely at the Jamaica estate, with Pat. www.pinterest.com…

Wonderful! That looks a lot like the same one.

The one Deirdre had was sold to Lincoln Hurst. That is the one I made three copies of plus the mold. When Lincoln passed away his house was broken into and it was trashed. It was either stolen then or it was under all the mess that these people trashed the house. I suspect that it was either stolen or it is in a land fill with a lot of the stuff that was damaged. It was brown in color because I had oiled it to make it look like a finish piece of art. The one that Arnella has in the photo, belonged to Errol it was up at Mulholland according to Deirdre and later Errol took it along with his desk and other belongs to Jamaica.

I don’t know how many of these Warners made, I’m sure the kept a few and one was taken by Deirdre, then ended up with Lincoln Hurst. I was able to make three copies
