Excellent question, TZ. It was not in a book or a movie, nor to my knowledge in any written form. I believe it was said to a reporter, or at least it was reported contemporaneously in the news.
Ruling out the other ‘G’, it was not John Garfield, either.

Tim, I think you are thinking of Howard Hughes.
The book is called ‘Howard Hughes – The Untold Story’
Chapter 19, page 193 “The Lone Wolf” and it says that Errol Flynn and Director Preston Sturges where the first who gave Howard the nickname “The Lone Wolf”

Though Errol is usually given lone credit for first calling Hughes “the lone wolf”, perhaps Preston Sturges was involved also. I imagine one if the two had to be “first”. In any case, you did a howling good job, Tina. Congratulations on yet another EFB quiz victory!

HH was a wolf in sheep`s clothing. Even Queen Bette succumbed to his canine charm like Little Red Ridinghood to Grandmother. This was tuff….. personality would say Erben and his life was that way but Howard was very social until the end as a recluse. Lone wolf would tend to say total independence and on the prowl…..I guess Howard would fit the bill….

I agree, timerider. I wonder if Flynn was poking fun at Howard, or just trying to boost his confidence or image. I think Hughes was already somewhat wacko in the late Thirties. I doubt many or any Hollywood stars would have “liked” or paid any attention him much but for his vast wealth and willingness to spend it on films and actresses. In contrast, IMO, many of them would have enjoyed a penniless Flynn.
