What a beat up old well worn range finder that saw so much action. It’s something to be proud of. Work and life well done. For me it would have been difficult to part with. However now it can be enjoyed by many to read and see the history it recorded and the man that used it. To see this, one visualizes Sean in the field and the nitty gritty times we lived through…..

As a professional photographer my interest was piqued by this story. I followed up on this report, wanting to see if the camera was legit. I shared the post on Facebook and with a little help from my friends, found the whole story of who the seller was and what happened to Sean’s Leica. As it turns out it was Rory, after hanging on to the camera for years, who sold the camera. In what could be seen as serendipitous, coming full circle, Sean’s camera is now back in Vietnam – “The camera will be featured with the bag and prints of Sean’s, Tim’s and others work at shows in the Leica store in Hanoi and at a government house in Ho Chi Minh city. There is the possibility of the show touring to other countries in the future. The camera will reside in Saigon with its owner.”

Read on in these couple of links for the back story, and some graphic Vietnam War images taken by Sean …

Fantastic, Philip. Thank YOU. You are one resourceful researcher! … What a way to debut the first Leica store in Vietnam.

Maybe it will someday range find its way around the world, perhaps finally to the Smithsonian, where it can be most prominently and permanently exhibited.
