A rare and unusual autograph letter from the young star, written to one of her matinee idols, Errol Flynn, thanking him for a gift of flowers. The note, which appears to have been left at Flynn’s Mullholland Farm doorstep, reads, in full: “Dear Errol Flynn. You are a hard man to get! I have called you several times to thank you for the lovely flowers, and nice note, but have not been lucky enough to reach you – They were lovely, and it was so nice of you to have thought of sending them – Thank you – See you soon, have fun! love Marilyn Monroe”
Flynn was one of Monroe’s screen idols as a child–she saw Flynn’s 1937 film Prince and the Pauper at least three times. When she made it in Hollywood, she attended at least a few of Flynn’s infamous parties on Mullholland Farm. Heddy Lamar recalled that Flynn used to conduct “greyhound” races on the hillside lawns surrounding his estate, with six young men donning numbers on their backs, would chase a “rabbit,” which was actually a young girl, topless, wearing bunny ears. The winner would get the girl, while the girl received a sable stole. “In fact, Marilyn Monroe was the bunny once; though in all fairness to Marilyn, she got the sable but the winner got only a kiss and a photograph of himself with Marilyn…” (McNulty, Errol Flynn, 312)

I do believe the note is genuine. The I- letter In Marilyn‘s letters is most distinct, the I HAVEs match each other to a T. The wording is almost identical to other correspondences and the text is very much in character. And what are the odds of the lines written on a calling card of the hostess of the Sobol wedding, if Marilyn didn‘t attend? However you can‘t help but notice that the name is spelled wrongly. The only other explanation I can think of, is that Pat maybe was probing Errol on his sincerity…a very wild guess I guess.

I think the note is genuine too. I have read (but don’t recall the source) that she had trouble placing the “i” in Marilyn after first adopting the name. I also have read that she had dyslexia. If genuine, as it seems, I suspect the flowers and note from Errol (it sounds like it’s in character for him) might have followed a date or hook-up, but the note indicates that the young Marilyn was somewhat pursuing him, as so many did. She undoubtedly grew up idolizing him, as many women of her age did. I wonder what he thought about it when she really made it big in the mid-50s? In some ways they were alike. Both Gemini, each had two sides of their personality and they were both also highly charismatic, charming, but insecure and troubled souls who ultimately self-destructed.
