A Candidate for Most Subtle In Like Flynn Reference Ever?
JAMES GREGORY AS VICE-PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE JOHNNY ISSELIN AND ANGELA LANSBURY AS HIS COMMUNIST AGENT “QUEEN OF DIAMONDS” WIFE AWAIT FOR THEIR SON (LAURENCE HARVEY) TO SHOOT THEIR PARTY’S PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE. SINATRA DID IT HIS WAY AND SAVES THE DAY, MAKING AMERICA IN LIKE FLYNN AGAIN.

Very well spotted Tim. A classic film, and great that the direct reference to Flynn made it into the cut.

Thank you, Philip. I regard this as extra interesting because Jessica Fletcher’s use of the expression is not sexual in nature, at least not apparently or obviously so. This is consistent as to how I recall “In Like Flynn” being used when I was a kid. When I heard “We’re In Like Flynn, or I’m In Like Flynn” in those days it was mostly, almost always to my recollection, equivalent to “We’ve got it made, or I’ve got it made”. It could, of course, apply to (perceived future) success with girls, but not most of the time. Perhaps it was different in other circles and neighborhoods, but not in my neck of NYC.

Interesting observation that the term was once used, though to a lesser extent now, in connotations other than the likely success in scoring with a young lady. I think that broader application of In Like Flynn is more appealing, at least in my humble opinion.
