      Good morning, Paula!

      I’ve got a feeling this a good film, made by people who really wanted to tribute and celebrate Errol. I admire that very, very much. Kudos to them. It’s so hard to make a movie, especially one like this.

      To produce an Indian Jones-like adventure film with such a limited budget, (about $12 Million?) is nearly impossible. Making things even more nearly impossible is to find an actor who can credibly play Errol Flynn.

      Regardless of whether it strikes box office gold I think this movie will be very good for Errol’s reputation and legacy. Very few movie watchers know the first thing about the amazing adventures of young Errol Flynn. This should help change that in a very positive way.

      Additionally, this adaptation of Beam Ends should help shine a light on Errol’s extraordinary gift for writing:

    After reading both reviews I am still a bit nervous. I am not liking the use of words like “romp” for instance. I always want a film or TV show to take itself seriously and let the humor come out of that. We shall see.

      You are right to be concerned, twinarchers. Reviews are mixed, with unfavorable ones appearing to outnumber favorable ones. It would be great to see someone produce a comprehensive documentary of Errol’s true adventures up, down, and around, Australia and New Guinea, as a young man – on Sirocco and otherwise. I would love that. Truth is better than fiction in the telling of Errol Flynn’s life.

      As you know, those years (from the late ’20s to 1933) are chock-full of amazing adventures, all of which could serve to make an awesome documentary. Here’s a small sample from ’30 and ’32:

      Perhaps Errol’s subsequent and also-amazing trip and adventures between Australia and England could be included to the documentary, or, perhaps better yet, be produced as an entirely separate documentary.

        There can only be one, Indyman Tim. Chris Hemsworth is from the same Aussie stock as Errol and probably the only actor around who could portrait Errol convincingly. As much as I liked Russell Mulcahy’s “Highlander” this trailer makes me cringe. It shows Flynn as a slapstick con artist which he never was. He was a prankster, charmer and brawler alright, but also introspective, insecure and had a dark side to him too. To catch an adequate glimpse at his larger than life personality and screen persona one would need the likes of a a Scorsese for a director and an all star cast as well. Too much, too baffoon!

          Good call, hemsheinz, but Chris will need to hurry. He definitely should have done it earlier, perhaps with his famous former girlfriend, Isabel L., belle of the ball in In Like Flynn.

          Regarding Scorcese, me thinks Flynn would have been sensational in Gangs of New York, up against Billy the Butcher bad-guy Basil Rathbone, I mean Daniel Day-Lewis.

    I saw this recently, before reading both MWWW and Beam Ends and tbh, I found it very tacky and cheesy. It felt low budget and the characters, especially the villains were very over the top and caricature-ish. It also didn’t help that they had a stock Quint from Jaws as one of the traveller’s. I am often generous with ratings so on first viewing, I gave it a 4/10.

    After having read MWWW and part of Beam Ends, I rewatched it, and found it not to be as bad as I thought. The villains were still weak, Shaw look alike was still poorly done, and there were deviations from the novel which I wouldn’t necessarily have a problem with but it was just not handled that well imo. A review said that they tried to insert a caricaturish girl boss which sunk the film. I have to agree.

    I feel like if they had made this into a coming of age story, with 4 young friends, it would’ve worked better. This may have been handled better if it was written and made back in the 80s and 90s I think. But with today’s climate, even 6 years ago, it’s hard to avoid inserting whatever the current fad is into an age ol tale between friends. The book reminds me somewhat of Stealing Home (1988), Breaking Away (1979), or Coupe de Ville (1990), a nostalgia for the passing or loss of youth and freedom that entails. As a book it also reminded me a bit of June Juanico’s In the Twilight of Memory, about the Summer of ’56 Romance with Elvis Presley. The ability to immerse you in that time period and place is a gift.

    It’s sad that the potential is there but instead it was made into a b grade, made for TV film Ala Relic Hunter. But strangely enough, it got better for me on 2nd viewing and after reading the first and midway through BE, I now rate it a 6/10, lol. I don’t like giving bad rating guys. And what’s even stranger, now that I finished BE, I feel rather sad and nostalgic and have an urge to rewatch it a 3rd time. All this rewatching within a 2 week period.
