    It was very rare to see normal American men (or women) wear beards in the 1930s or 40s. … Orson was way ahead of his time.

      Maybe so, David, but I believe it was rare for even European men (and women) too at hat particular (post safety razor) time, except for bohemians, some academics, et al. Perhaps Orson was channeling the earlier-era magician in him.

      In any case, Flynn and Gwinn sure had a lot of gall lampooning Orson. After all, Errol himself was seen a time or two with Wellesian-like whiskers.

    They wanted to have a beard pulling contest with him.
