No. 1 for Apple Records

31 Mar

What was the first record pressed by Apple Records ?

It wasn’t “Those were the Days”

Na, it wasn’t “Hey Jude”

It wasn’t performed by The Beatles, but, rather, by a very famous singer who knew Flynn.

For many years few ever heard the recording, but a beautiful Flynn Mother Should’ve Known:

— Tim

    A tough quiz for sure.

“Apple 1” was 2 songs actually.

No “connection” between them other then joined in this special recording- they had different composers and 10 years separates their compositional inceptions.

The first is well known whose lyrics have even been adapted over the years; the second has essentially remained unchanged.

It’s the 2nd song that has the Flynn tie in.

It’s premier was in a film with a successful comedy team
who were stand alone talents in their own right.

It’s been covered by many of the great songsters over the past almost 70 years: Nat King Cole, Lady Day, Doris Day, Aretha, Streisand, Zimmerman and even Gaga!

This recording was actually a hit for a CROONER who “REPRISE”d it in this special1967 re-recording.

    Hope this helps…

Kudos King Karl. It’s not as well known as The Lady is a Tramp, but beautiful it is indeed. “But Beautiful” was written for Nora, and, I believe, was performed at her funeral, following Sean’s eulogy for her.

Great to see Discjockey Tim and King Karlos at the turntables again. Talking about turning tables. “But Beautiful” author Jimmy Van Heusen was smitten by Nora and for sure didn`t take it lightly when she divorced Errol to marry cruel crooner Dick Haymes. But with his song he gave her a gift of life to have him in her life forever. www.vanityfair.com….

          GREAT FIND Shamus Shang!

This article has recently RE-emerged from obscurity; at one point (internet-ed-ly) accessible and then GONE into the ether!

Originally titled “Songwriter”, by James Kaplan, it appeared in an “in house” industry rag, Movies Rock (a special Conde Nast Publication), in December 2007.

As Nora relates in her (ahem) autobiography, Errol and Me:

(About a time after Dierdre’s birth and while still living in a separate residence):

“… It was time for something drastic … So the first step was to date men and be seen places. So I started with Peter Lawford, JIMMY VAN HEUSEN, the songwriter, and Bentley Ryan, an attorney with the Greg Bautzer office … On one occasion, I was out with Bob Hutton…”

As the Kaplan article relates, he and Nora were MORE THAN “but beautiful” friends and had a lasting FRIENDSHIP as witnessed in a subsequent news item:

The Milwaukee Sentinel, July 12, 1957, Warner Has Inside On King Ranch Story, by Louella Parsons:

“ Good to see composer Jimmy Van Heusen at a party after his painful spinal illness. He was with Nora Eddington Haymes who devoted herself to making him comfortable.”

BTW, the comedy team I referred to earlier were Hope and Crosby, and Crosby premiered the song in Road to Rio (1947). And for Sinatra a recording hit the following year!

Thanks for putting this into the right timeframe, King Karl. So their aquaintance went way back to the time when Deirdre was born. According to her autobiography, which I have yet to read, Nora was a good sport, but not a happy camper. Right from the start, gossip columnists wrote she was seeing very little of Errol. While in Acapulco Freddie McEvoy kept her company and Jimmy Van Heusen had a huge reputation as ladies‘ man. His favourite move when introducing himself was playing on a woman‘s features like on his piano. Many girls fell for that. For all we know Flynn was an absent lover but devoted father, even if at a later date he half jokingly and semi charming said to Dr. Erben that he now has so many kids he almost lost count. He never ever questioned his fatherhood though and I think would also have been a grand dad for Marilyn Hassau.
