The photo* I supplied was of William Beebe, author of “Zaca Venture” and “The Book of Bays”- both about expeditions along the Pacific Coast aboard Zaca.
“Cruise” was about a year long adventure about the world also aboard the Zaca and written by Templeton Crocker.
The better title “guess” might be of Nora perusing one of the 2 Beebe efforts as this “still” was, no doubt, taken during the filming of the film, “Cruise of the Zaca”!
I’m headed off to the broom closet now in my preparations for swabbing the decks.
* BTW, a Crocker photo not so easily obtainable as it turns out!
Excellent exploration on the HMS Holmberg, Captain Karl!
Is it Beebe or not Beebe? That is the question. …I’ve done a deep dive and came up with this video, much of it filmed at my old stomping grounds and waters on and off Brooklyn, where Beebe’s Bathysphere ultimately landed after its famed descent off Bermuda.
Beebe was very big in Errol’s day and world. An exemplary explorer he was.
On the topic of Harry Crocker, he was a fascinating character, long before The Zaca. A world explorer, a central figure at Bohemian Grove, an outstanding librettist, a Hollywood (Behind the Makeup) columnist, close friends with Charlie Chaplin (and Paulette Goddard), owner and resident of the “world’s greatest apartment” on a hill in San Francisco, an Art Deco advocate, and on and on and on. Errol likely knew him, probably a decade before purchasing The Zaca.
