There’s a good chance Raoul Walsh was there also, and almost certainly he knew what was whispered, though unlikely he actually heard it.
Errol traveled many thousands of miles with this alleged lovemaking competitor, prior to and subsequent to this dubious disclosure.

Tim, is the movie The Man I Love? That came up after Googling Dolores Moran and Raoul Walsh. Ida Lupino was in the cast, and she’s certainly one of Flynn’s fave leading ladies.
Presumably, then, she made the revelation during the filming of that movie? That’s as far as I go.

Excellent research, Barb. It wasn’t Ida, but it was someone similar in that she, too, was one of Errol’s greatest friends. The leading lady who initiated this shocking claim that The Mighty Flynn fell short of first place is pictured below being courted by two Navy officers a few months before Pearl Harbor.

Your clues did it, Tim. After Googling Alexis Smith, Dolores Moran, and Raoul Walsh, all the top entries were The Horn Blows at Midnight. All your other clues lined up with Benny.

I thought you might bite on the Bing Crosby red herring, Barb! Bing had the requisite four-letter first name. But you are too good! …The connection of course was Love in Bloom, which Bing sang well, but Benny made even more famous, though not by name nearly as much as by the way it so perfectly suited his hammy off-key violining so very well.
