Tim, I googled “wretched statue” and came up with Libbie Custer and the original statue of George Custer at West Point. As to why, all I found was that she didn’t care for the likeness or its representation of a soldier. It was removed five years after it was unveiled.
If this is correct, where on earth did you dig this up?

You are too dang good, barb! I made a wretched mistake naming this quiz! Being Independence Day Weekend I was looking up some Revolutionary War history and coincidentally came across this statue of Custer that, IMHO, looked not right – clothed incorrectly, posing incorrectly, the wrong setting, and evoking the wrong era – and not with Custer’s bravado. So, I researched further and found this long-ago article now linked above and below:
Custer Statue Letter
Your having solved this with such astonishing alacrity, I am compelled to erect another statue-quiz. Let’s see you tear down this next one so quickly!

Trust me, Tim, I never would have guessed Custer on my own. From the back, the statue just looked “off.” I looked up statues in Hobart or Australia generally, then I thought maybe Captain Bligh. I totally struck out with everything else I came up with and then figured I’d use your exact phrase in Google. I’ve seen Custer’s monument at West Point. Uh, quite different from this statue, needless to say.
