This is really wild, Tim. Flynn was supposed to portray Nathan Hale??? I googled Kate Smith and Errol Flynn and came up with a link to an article in the Errol Flynn blog from late last year: www.theerrolflynnblog.com…

Errol Flynn on the Kate Smith Hour from KNX at 9 will play the part of Nathan Hale in “Heritage,” an original drama by Jean Holloway. Johnny Burke as “The Original Draftee” and the Three Pitchmen will be other features. Miss Smith will close her program with “We’re All Americans.”

In recognition of your valiance and talents solving this quite challenging Fourth of July Quiz, you have earned the very first First Lady of Quizzes Award. (Though far more alliterative, ‘Queen of Quizzes’ would be quite inappropriate for this particular quiz, on this particular day.)
As far as whether this radio show was actually broadcast, I believe it likely was as it appears to have been announced on the day of the show. Have you ever known Zuma Palmer* to be wrong? ….Moreover, it’s on the internet, so it must be true
* Plus, Zuma Palmer’s brother, Harlan, was owner of the Hollywood Citizen News and was Hollywood’s very first attorney. Have you ever known either a newspaper or a lawyer to lie? (I rest my case.)

I’m humbled and honored, Tim, but you get the lion’s share of the credit. You find this stuff in the first place and then come up with the clues. Another great job.
But this is the first I’ve ever heard of a Flynn/Nathan Hale connection. That’s really out there. LOL

In the “local” LA news papers, on 11/29/37, it was announced that Errol Flynn was to star in “The Life of Nathan Hale”. Nothing more was said thereafter which suggests it was dropped early on.
As for the “Kate Smith Hour”, no extant recording exists. There are reputedly 36 that do but this particular show is not among them.

Thank you, Karl! Nathan Hale was only 21 when he was hanged (and left hanging for three days) by British troops. So, Errol may have been too old to realistically play the part in 1938, at the age of 29. Having said that, however, especially if the film ignored Hale’s age, I think it could have been a great role for Errol. Plus, Errol could have possibly passed for being in his early Twenties in 1938.

Another thank you, Karl, for your updates. And I agree, Tim, that Flynn probably could have pulled off playing Hale, especially in a black-and-white film. How you even found that nugget in the first place is mightily impressive.
