Figure This Quiz!

01 Aug

The following three sets of measurements were recorded as belonging to three Hollywood stars circa 1942. One set belonged to the mighty Flynn. Which set was it? To whom did the other two sets belong to??

Thank you to one of the world’s best Flynn researchers for finding these figures! Very few measure up to him!

Irish blood in all three.

All worked for Warners.

One was a star before Errol and later married a good friend of Errol. He, though, was not a good friend to Errol – likely out of bitter envy because he did not generate the sparks or voltage Errol did, either with women or on screen. In fact, even his wife liked Errol more than she liked him.

The other was a friend to Errol, but played enemies of him in two films. He became a big star after Errol did.

One was well known for playing ethnic roles. In one such role he killed Errol.

The other often appeared on screen as a love interest of Bette Davis …And had an affair with her off screen, as well.

    Is the friend Anthony Quinn?

Yes it is, barb! Very good, especially as most people don’t think of A.Q. as having any Irish blood at all, despite his last name. In contrast, the second man of similar measurements, was thoroughly Irish, though he ditched his Irish last name for his acting career. In fact, he was so Irish he worked as a courier and doppelganger for Michael Collins during the IRA’s heyday.

Here’s a unique “silent” take on the Mighty Quinn taking out the Mighty Flynn. Interesting, I think, because of the way it focuses differently on scenes from on Errol’s Last Stand.

And here’s Errol killing Tony a decade later … a movie also starring a full-blooded native of Eire, dear Prudence “Spitfire” Stevens. (Whose measurements are not part in this quiz!)

My guess is that the two “mystery actors” are, respectively, George Brent and Anthony Quinn.
I just have some doubts about the accuracy of the measurements. Brent (quite a guy in reality, and rather underrated as an actor, in my opinion) looks to me considerably shorter than Errol. Quinn (whom I had seen in person) also seemed shorter than 6’2”. A wonderful Sunday to all, D.

Regarding Measurement Man No. 2, the last man standing: Not long after marrying he married a Warner star, Errol was South of the Border with her (in Mexico City) having an extended fiesta.

Comhghairdeas, Claudia! Indeed it was! Galway George Brendan Nolan Brent himself – doppelganger for Michael Collins and Hollywood hanger for Bette D!

Looks like we have a neck-in-neck tie between quiz hall-of -famers, barb and Claudia!! So, how about this tie-breaker?

Which of the three – Errol the Aussie, George the Irishman, or Zorba the Greek- had the narrowest waist and ankles?

Considering that nobody ever came close to our man Flynn in any regard (or ever will), my money is on the Aussie, Tim.

Aussome, Claudia! Per the May 1942 edition of Photoplay, the stats above belonged to Errol, Brent, and Tony, in that order, top to bottom. Errol won first prize for “The Best Physique in Hollywood”.

Thanks Tim, and the result is no real surprise to me. He was the Perfect Specimen in many regards. If it was possible to measure swag, he would have been on top of that list, too!

And thanks to Karl for finding these measurements. I sure wonder how Photoplay got them. ;-)

I love any time George Brent is mentioned, he’s so underrated.
