Sometimes, we get comments sent in via the email version of the blog and this came in from Norman:

The pic was taken on June 11, 1942 at the Navy Relief Ball at the Cocoanut Grove. She was hired in late February/early-March as his private secretary. She later appeared on the cover of Yank magazine. A giveaway is that he is sans moustache. Here are a couple of shots.

    Enjoy,

    Norman

Thanks for input, Norman. Not unusual, and always good to resolve.

These two links seem to state/imply/support a 1944 date, but that doesn’t mean they’re correct. I wish the photo showed the Sheik Valentino Cocoanut Palms, or some other defining feature of Cocoanut Grove.

I haven’t found those unique balustrades in any photos at Cocoanut Grove – Nor any sight of Errol or Maryanne on the dance floor, or otherwise at the event in the Martin Turnbull link above. But, that could be just a matter of more research and time.

Looks like we have conflicting dates on the net. By any chance do you have any contemporaneous Navy Relief Ball news accounts documenting the date? If so, please link or post. Thanks.

Whatever the date, it’s certainly a date I would have loved to have had! She was GORGEOUS!!!

P.S. It speaks very highly of you that your a fan of Robin Hood, despite the fact that you’re a Norman.

Does this photo help confirm the photo of Errol and Mary Ann was taken at the Cocoanut Grove? Near the balustrades in the background, to the right, perhaps?

Got this just now from Norman who says:

Good work on the photo of the Cocoanut grove interior. The railings certainly appear to be the same unique design. Also, the date of Nov. 15, 1944 does not work because Flynn is filming San Antonio with full moustache and sideburns.

There is an err, though, in my submittal. Mary was not ‘on the cover’ of the magazine.

She was the pin-up girl in that issue.

Great work, Norman. Aside from the mustache, Errol looks like he aged significantly by the time of San Antonio photo you posted. In the photo with Mary Anne above he looks to be at a peak of his youthful handsomeness. So, I agree with your 1942 date. …Does this mean, as it now appears, that all the claims that Errol was dating Mary Anne in ’44 are incorrect?

I found a snippet of February 1944 that still has them together. Definitely 1942/43.
So he dated her quite a long time.
