The actor was “new to the movies.”

This unusual behavior, rarely if ever seen before on a Hollywood set, was reported publicly on December 19, 1947, 73-years ago today.

    Trees were involved, too.

Your half the way there, Bob! And a great answer it was. It was indeed the donkey — but, he or she (jackass or jenny) did something much more unusual, maybe even unprecedented for any Hollywood actor, animal or human.

Escape Me Never being a movie involving musicians, here’s a jazzy clue.*

*Though it’s a hoot, the owl has no relevance to this quiz.

One last guess Tim. Chew the scenery. That must be wrong due to many actors having fulfilled that hoot.

BRAVO BOB… I don’t even think Dorothy Kilgallen and Arlene Francis* COMBINED, (and without blindfolds) could have figured this one out!

        * Panelists on the show, What’s My Line, who could AMAZINGINGLY figure out a contestants’ line of work or a visiting celebrity’s (while wearing blindfolds) identity…with the scantiest of clues! One of the few times Kilgallen was stumped was when her own father appeared as the special guest!

Congratulations, Bob! First, you pinned the tale on the donkey. Then you answered correctly that he was eating the paper mache trees. Bark off the wrong trees, so to speak.

Regarding your very astutely humorous observation that many actors have chewed the scenery , I would just point out that, in this unique case, unlike the usual scene eating jackasses, this donkey LITERALLY ate the scenery, not metaphorically!

        “December 19, 1947

Over at Warners’, on the set of Escape Me Never, where the stars are Errol Flynn and Ida Lupino, the star attraction on the set the other afternoon was a donkey. This donkey, however, was new to the movies. The performing donkey stopped proceedings and filming by eating a couple of paper-mache trees.”
