It was a Golden Age film, filmed during Errol’s golden years.

Tim, My guess is “Montana” (1950) with Alexis Smith. Errol Flynn was a sheep rancher in it!

Excellent answer, Ralph, but it’s not Montana. The film related to the ram above actually had no sheep in it, though there were some very baaaad rats, played by very good actors.

Nor does this quiz have anything to do with those gruesome sheep duties Errol used to perform Down Under!

O. K. I am going take three guesses.
Guess number one is: “Adventures of Don Juan”
Guess number two is:”Master of Ballantrae”
and my last guess is: “The Dark Avenger”,
but then again could be “Against All Flags”!
(Yes I know that’s four guesses; so sue me!)–A. R.

No litigation will be initiated, A.R.! At least not until after the these holy days of joy and peace have fully passed.

Besides, the courts are very busy at this time and it is not any of those four, thus leaving me with a very weak case, perhaps no standing at all.

My uneducated guess would be The Sea Hawk, Tim. If my memory serves me right, King Philipp of Spain was wearing a similar pendant of the Golden Fleece in that movie.

Brava, Claudia! You are one royally good quizmaster!

By the power not vested in me by the King of Spain, I hereby award you the Orden del Toisón de Oro, the Order of the Golden Fleece. Until this moment, there have only been 51 ever. So, after nearly 590 years, YOU have now completed the deck!

Godspeed, Queen Claudia!

From The Sea Hawk:

My honor, Your Highness!

This actually has an extra interesting twist of history, Claudia, because Queen Elizabeth I and the Roman Catholic Church (perhaps most notably the Spanish Church) were notorious arch enemies. In The Sea Hawk (with Flora Robson as QE 1, of course) Elizabethan-era Spain not-so-subtly substituting for Nazi Germany, with an apparent insinuation of analogy also between WW II’s swastika and the Philip II’s Order of the Golden Fleece.

Here’s Errol in a Nazi, I mean Spanish, court:

Queen Elizabeth’s rousing anti-Hitler, I mean anti- Philip II, speech closing The Sea Hawk:

And now, my loyal subjects, a grave duty confronts us all: To prepare our nation for a war that none of us wants, least of all your queen. We have tried by all means in our power to avert this war. We have no quarrel with the people of Spain or of any other country; but when the ruthless ambition of a man threatens to engulf the world, it becomes the solemn obligation of all free men to affirm that the earth belongs not to any one man, but to all men, and that freedom is the deed and title to the soil on which we exist. Firm in this faith, we shall now make ready to meet the great armada that Philip sends against us. To this end, I pledge you ships – ships worthy of our seamen – a mighty fleet, hewn out of the forests of England; a navy foremost in the world – not only in our time, but for generations to come.

Carl Pitt : [leading a cheer] To England, and the Queen!

Thank you, Barb – but the credit has to go to „modern“ technology, not to my eyes as I‘m blind as a bat without my contacts. I used to watch the Sea Hawk on video tape as a teenager and always wondered about that pendant, but it was virtually impossible to recognize. Only when I saw it on dvd, I was able to see it clearly thanks to the zoom. However, it never occured to me to investigate further, so a big THANK YOU goes to Tim for remedying this!

Claudia – You have solved The Case of the Curious Pendant! For doing so, I believe you are eminently qualified to join the Society of the Golden Fleece (for free – don’t let them fleece you for any fees.)

barb -with all the talent out there reading these quizzes, I have to make them very challenging, or, as you say, “devilish”! (:-)) If I didn’t, they’d be solved in a Flynn minute#

One of the world’s great Flynn scholars very humorously called this particular quiz “Ram tough”!

Thank you and all for playing these quizzes with me all through this Damn tough year!

Thank *you,* Tim, for your quizzes that are one of the few bright spots in this ram/damn tough year!

Claudia, in all the more-than-I-can-count times that I’ve seen the Sea Hawk, I’ve never noticed that pendant, so your eyes get the win!
