January 23, 1942 — Who was She?

23 Jan

She was famous, and so was her husband.

On the evening of January 23, 1942, she had dinner with friends and watched “They Died with Their Boots On” and found it very thrilling. They also watched news reels.

Who was she?

— Tim

      Sorry, barb, I intended more.

Her initials match those of a famous television show which starred an actor wrongly named on this list as more handsome than Errol:

My apologies, Tim, I wasn’t being critical of your not having more clues, I was just clueless!

:-) I knew you weren’t being critical, barb. I’ve just been inundated with some troublesome nonsense, and forgot to post clues! So, here are a couple more:

      1. She had several homes, one of which she always referred to by its color.

      2. She knew and liked Errol very much. He had worked with her on at least one major charity.

    Well, Tim, let‘s see…

While I don‘t think George Clooney is ugly, I fully agree that he definitely isn‘t more handsome than Errol. I also seem to recall that he was in a tv show called „Emergency Room“ a long, long time ago – which in turn leads me to a (first) lady married to someone our man Flynn admired very much.

Am I on the right track, Quizmaster Tim?

Exactamundo, Claudia. Unless, of course, you are about to answer ‘Eleanor Rigby.’

Haha, Tim, not really although that‘s a nice song.

I think I‘ll rather try my luck with Eleanor Roosevelt. :)

By the powers vested in me by the Great Odds, I hereby pronounce you, Claudia of Bavaria, this week’s First Lady of Flynnland. Long live Claudia!

P.S. For those who may believe my quiz clues are clueless (using barb’s wonderfully humorous expression from yesterday) the original title of Paul Simon’s Mrs. Robinson was “Mrs. Roosevelt”..

Here’s to all you EFB quiz players. Any way you look at it you win with Flynn.

Wow, congrats, Claudia, and another great quiz, Tim! Your clues are devilish, not clueless. :) I wound up going in a totally different direction. I kept thinking a film star was the person who watched the movie. While I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, the name on the list above Flynn who could have starred in a TV series that I zeroed in on was Brad Pitt. He appeared in Growing Pains, and so I was looking at stars with initials of GP or PG.

Very interesting that the song Mrs. Robinson initially was called Mrs. Roosevelt. I don’t remember much about the movie at this point, but judging by the clip, was the Robinson house a white house? And Mrs. Robinson’s daughter, Elaine, also had ER for her initials.

As an aside, sorry you’re dealing with any troublesome nonsense. Life is too short.

    Thanks for the fun quiz!

Here’s ER’s own account of the event, barb

      www2.gwu.edu…

“[W]e had a group of friends to dinner, and were shown the latest newsreels and a very thrilling Errol Flynn movie called, “They Died With Their Boots On.”

It is the story of General George Armstrong Custer. What a personality he must have been! He was full of life and courage, a dare devil, always in trouble and had plenty of faults and foibles. But he made enemies of the people who should have been enemies, and was adored and followed to the death by his cavalrymen. He lived in a colorful period, which allowed for the development of just the qualities which he had.

In another way, we are living through the same kind of period at the moment, and perhaps we shall also develop some General Custers. We have made a good beginning, I think, in some of the things which have happened in the Battle of Manilla and Pearl Harbor.”

Thanks Barb, and thanks Tim for another fun and challenging quiz. I was thinking of a movie star first, too.

I would renounce my title in a second for a certain Baron. ;-)
