February 1, 1943, was a day Errol and our mystery man were both in the news together in a very significant magazine..

February 2, 1945, was a very significant day that he was with FDR.

Tim, is the person Ed Flynn, who became Democratic National Committee chairman? Using your clues, I thought the significant magazine might be LIFE Magazine. Then I searched for LIFE Magazine for February 1, 1943 and found online that issue and its table of contents. One of the articles is about the cases of Ed Flynn and Errol Flynn. I then Googled Ed Flynn and found that he was close to FDR, who unsuccessfully tried to appoint him ambassador to Australia in 1943 (the Senate didn’t confirm).

I’m not sure about the significance of February 2, 1945, but that is toward the end of the Malta Conference and just before the start of the Yalta Conference.

Yes, barb, that is correct! Tammany titan, Edward J. Flynn himself! Who was in LIFE magazine story together with Errol on Feb 1, 1943, and who, on Feb 2, 1945, accompanied FDR to Yalta.

On behalf of Flynn fans around the globe, you are hereby officially declared a distinguished and Right Honourable Member of the In with Flynn Inner Circle!

Why is he relevant here on the EFB? Here’s why:

    “In like Flynn”

To my mind, there’s only one source of “In Like Flynn.” :-) But that’s fascinating that there are other claims to being the source of the phrase.

Another great quiz, Tim, thank you!

        Great job, Barb, congratulations!

I also thought that our man Flynn was the one and only „inspiration“ for „In like Flynn“ so it‘s interesting to read the other theories. Thanks for sharing, Tim, and for yet another awesome quiz!

I agree with you, barb and Claudia. One thing is certain, the only reason the expression has endured is because of Errol. If it had been said first with Ed Flynn, it was rare and local, likely only in The Big Apple (the city not the dance), mainly among Tammany Hallers. I would bet, however, that, after Errol’s trial, its popularity probably caused some to use it in reference to Big Boss Flynn. The synchronicity of their public troubles made that likely imo. New Yorkers love those kind of catchphrases.
