Quiz Lite: What Movie was It?

09 Feb

February 8

Was filmed largely in a city where Errol once lived.

Two of the stars knew Errol personally, but in very different ways.

One first met him in the 1930s. The other first met him in the 1950s.

One starred in movies with Errol. The other did not.

Both also knew Lili, but in very different ways.

Tim, the only movie I can come up with that might qualify is „The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone“ – but I have to admit I don‘t have a clue who the two stars might be. I suppose Errol did meet Vivien Leigh at some point but that‘s about it. ;-)
I‘m really curious to see the solution to yet another fabulous quiz!

Congratulationi, Claudia of Bavaria and Beyond!

You have correctly identified Rome! …

Despite the Roman connection, I conceived this quiz (“lite”) while downing my first Paulaner’s Salvator Dopplebock, down A1A from the scene depicted in the fourth photo. This fourth photo is a scene connected to both one of the stars in our mystery film, as well as to one of Errol’s close family members. The music video in German above relates to those two.

Vivien was not in the film, but someone who very famously starred with Vivien (and Errol) was!

Tim, this is a bit off the wall, but the first thing I always thing of when Connie Francis is mentioned is the movie and its them song, Where the Boys Are. I couldn’t imagine what that had to do with anything until you said that you were on A1A, which I take to mean the highway in Florida. Where the Boys Are is about college students in Fort Lauderdale during Easter break, so I thought maybe there was a clue there, apart from Sean’s unbilled blink-and-you-miss-it appearance. George Hamilton is the leading male star of Where the Boys Are, and after reading that Claudia nailed Rome being the location of the movie that your quiz is about, I looked at Hamilton’s credits to see what might have been filmed in Rome.

So … could the correct answer be Light in the Piazza, co-starring Olivia?

As an aside, after Olivia died, Hamilton was interviewed about his experience working with Olivia in that movie, and he spoke glowingly of her.

brava, barb, brava!!! Livvie’s Light in the Piazza it is! Magnifica!

…When doing early-1960 Rome-related quizzes, do as the Romans did, i.e. award a Roman Torch of Light trophies. Accordingly, barb, you are hereby awarded the First Annual EFB Errolivia Torch of Light!

here’s George Hamilton’s lovely love interest in Light of the Piazza, Yvette Mimieux, who also starred in Where the Boys Are. Looks like she could be cheering for you!

I am honored, Tim. :-) Was the specific music in the Connie Francis clue tied in somehow to the correct answer?

Here is the article by George Hamilton after Olivia’s death: www.hollywoodreporter.com…

The only clue intended with the Connie Francis song was Connie herself, barb. Her starring with George Hamilton (and Yvette Mimieux) and her singing the famous theme song, were the only points of posting her singing as a clue….(By the way, I met her about twelve years ago at a very popular tiki bar on AIA, where she joined the band to sing Where the Boys Are.)

Sounds like George Hamilton had a crush on Olivia!

Was she head over heels about him? This photo proves not!

Got it, Tim. I always liked Connie Francis .. great voice. How fun for you to have met her and heard her sing that iconic song in person.

And what a photo of Olivia … that handstand is mightily impressive!

Thank you, Claudia, but as usual, it took a village. I couldn’t begin to imagine what Connie Francis had to do with any of this, much less where my mind was going with Where the Boys Are. It wasn’t until you mentioned Rome and then Tim mentioned A1A that I looked closer at the movie. Couldn’t have done it without you both. :-)
