Errol in Hell-Hot Havana

11 Mar

Released in New York – March 11, 1957

“The opportunity to get a good, 90 minute look at scenic (and in parts, seedy) Havana, the “The Latin Las Vegas” prior to the Castro revolution. THE BIG BOODLE also boasts an interesting cast, with the rare opportunity to see beautiful Italian actress Rory (who retired at 35 after barely a dozen films); the stunning, but troubled Scala; and of course, Flynn. If you’re a fan of any of them or the locale you’ll want THE BIG BOODLE in your collection.”

Tim is right, “The Big Boodle” (1957) is first-rate ‘film noir’ with a solid dramatic performance from Errol Flynn is his last starring role. Rosanna Rory and Gia Scala are gorgeous and add to the picturesque scenery of Havana. The only fault in the film was that it was shot in black & white, when this travelogue mystery with sunny locales cries out for color! Flynn was slipping because if it starred Robert Mitchum or Glenn Ford it would have been shot in color.

Right, RR. By that time in his career, Errol lived by his sheer wit. He peddled his image, which before had been: adventurer- athlete-lady killer and now had become elder statesman with a glass in one hand a cigarette butt in the other. A quick joke and an anecdote were exchanged for a signed dotted line -no matter what movie- in his ever ready chequebook.
