Love at first fight

20 Mar

Dear Flynnmates,

I want to share with you an (at least to me) unknown image of Laddie Errol and Lady Livvie.

Both visibly enjoy each others company, our Hollywood hero even gives it a two arrows up.

The pic must have been taken at the early stages of filming The Adventures of Robin Hood, since Flynn wears the knight outfit for the later on cancelled jousting tournament scene.

The idea originated from the grand opening in the original ROHO- movie: (163) Robin Hood (Klassiker von und mit Douglas Fairbanks [ABENTEUER 1922] Stummfilm, ganzer Film Deutsch) – YouTube

Enjoy,

wunderbar, herrheinz! Took me zwei days to finish, but it was for a mighty joust cause. fairbanks was fantastic, as was the production. only errol and the technicolor masterpiece of 1938 has ever surpassed him and it.

Glad you like this silent talkie, Movieman Tim. Had it been filmed in colour too, it would have been too much of a groove thing.

Thank you (Cinematically) Historical Heinz, for your comments and…

a BEAUTIFUL print of Fairbanks’s RH for ALL to see (with an assist from Kino International) to boot!

Fairbanks is sometimes mentioned here and I wanted to share a special (related) story. I went in search of the footage (unsuccessfully, though have definitely seen it) and found this MOST EXCELLENT bio along the way.

Here’s the story followed by the bio:

“In the midst of preparing Hollywood’s most expensive productions, Fairbanks seemed to thrive on the energy that only boyhood foolishness could supply. As the sets were being completed for ROBIN HOOD, Fairbanks was advised that a shoestring independent producer wanted to rent the mammoth castle for his own film, to be released before ROBIN HOOD. An angry Fairbanks rejected the idea outright. Nonetheless, he was convinced to come down to watch a run-through of the scene that was to be shot on his castle set. As Fairbanks fumed, watching from an observation tower, he saw the forty-foot drawbridge in front of the castle slowly, ever so slowly, begin to be cranked down. Finally, as it touched the ground, he saw a tiny figure in a woolly nightgown, slippers, and a sleep cap walk out of the castle, carrying a kitten. At the end of the drawbridge, the little man stopped, yawned, stretched, and put the kitten down. He picked up a bottle of milk and a newspaper. Then, he turned and slowly walked back into the castle. Up went the drawbridge. The little man was, of course, Charlie Chaplin, and Fairbanks roared with laughter as he realized he’d been set up with a lavish, exquisite practical joke. For him, movie making could offer no more delicious reward.”
