Dear Flynnmates,
the old saying that life resembles a solitary beach has never been truer than today.
Last fall I had the opportunity to roam the desert sands of Lido isle in Venice almost all by myself
The Excelsior Hotel, well known from the Thomas Mann novel “Death in Venice” emerged as a ghost castle right before me.
It was there in September of 1953, where Errol´s “The Story of William Tell” movie came to a full stop.
At the Biennale film festival, prankster Flynn faked a back injury while dancing the Bogalloo in the presence of John Huston and King Farouk.
He wanted to cash in his insurance policy and finish “the greatest film ever” in Italy.
But instead of taking Lloyd`s for a gondola ride, Will Tell sailed into the sunset.
Enjoy,

At first it was all fun and games when Errol joined the performance of a professional dancing troupe that night, Ballroom Tim. Than he claimed to have slipped a disc and was carried not on a stretcher, but a table to his room by four waiters.

Yes, Gentlemask Tim, these rare and moving pictures of Errol at the Film Biennale of Vence show him putting up a good show in dire times. His pokerface never showed the troubles of the ill fated Will Tell. With two girls at each arm and Italian apprentice Amedeo Nazzari in tow, once again he made the world his stage.

The morning after saw Errol rise like Lazarus and mingle with sweet sexy shooting star Brigitte Bardot, whose attention went back and forth between Odysseus Kirk Douglas and Old Sport Flynn. Our Hollywood hero stirred her a drink with whats looked like a seagull feather…

I’m going to have to study B.B. further to see exactly what people saw in her. If “Odysseus” Douglas and “Old Sport” Flynn* saw something, there must have been something. It’s tedious research, but someone has to do it. Here is a day and night couplet of Bridgett in Venice:

* “Odysseus” Douglas vis-à-vis “Old Sport” Flynn??!! I hope for your sake Errol doesn’t read that one, troubleheinz! (As you know, he boxed in the Olympics … Or was it when he was in the Olympiads? Something like that.)
Here’s to the Old Sport and the Pretty Young Thing!

Here‘s a last spotlight on that Venetian event from my private Flynn photo collection, Chandelierman Tim. It pinpoints how Higham again wrote as he pleased with no reference to reality. Errol was on top of his game, even if he turned the masquerade into a charade later on.
