    David Rocco tells me:

Not sure if you are aware of this fact, but my co-author Don Keith has written or co-authored over thirty books. Just shortly before I got to know him, I happened to buy two of his books in January 2017 at my local BJs store. The first one I read was titled, Undersea Warrior. It was about US Navy submarine legend Dudley “Mush” Morton. Turns out there was a Errol Flynn connection to this story that I completely forgot about. Don reminded me this fact in his email this morning. I pasted Don’s remarks below. Amazing stuff!

You know Errol Flynn shows up in my book UNDERSEA WARRIOR, the story of Commander Dudley “Mush” Morton and the submarine USS Wahoo…one of the most successful warships and skippers of World War II. Here is the excerpt:

“Sea trials and training for new crew members lasted until July 20. The star power of Wahoo and Mush Morton continued. The captain invited the famous actor Errol Flynn to host a party for the crew the night before they departed Mare Island. Flynn accepted, but did not stop there. The next morning, on the twenty-first, with the boat deemed ready to return to the war, Wahoo departed San Francisco Bay headed back across the Pacific to Pearl Harbor. Flynn rode aboard the submarine, enjoying the view from the bridge and cigarette deck, all the way out to about twenty miles from the mouth of the bay. Then Flynn went back over to the pilot boat with the harbor pilot for the ride back to San Francisco.”

    Followup from David Rocco:

Turns out the officer next to Errol Flynn is not Mush Morton, but the newly appointed Executive Officer Paine. Sadly it ended up being his one and only trip on the Wahoo. Once they left Pearl Harbor for a patrol in the China Sea, the Wahoo was caught in a fierce battle between the northern coast of Japan and the southern tip of a Russian peninsula on the China Sea. Since the Wahoo had set a record for sinking so many Japanese Imperial Navy ships, they went full force with subs, ships and planes after the Wahoo when it was discovered patrolling the northern China Sea.

I wondered how Errol Flynn felt when he found out the Wahoo was lost at sea killing all 70+ crewmen?
