Fencing is not what he’s famous for.
It’s not certain whether he taught Errol.
He was very accomplished and respected in his profession, in which fencing skills were not required.

So interesting you asked, Selene. The photo above is of Also Nadi, whose birthday is today, April 29! He was one of the 20th Century’s great fencers. He was born in Livorno, only about a four hours drive from your hometown of Lugano.
But he’s not the answer to our quiz, who was born in October, about sixteen years before Signore Nadi.

congratulations barb! Professor Flynn was quite the man! A Renaissance man! In addition to his extraordinary, still important, scientific research and discoveries, he was an excellent athlete, known for playing tennis, and teach fencing, when he lived in Hobart. The ladies liked him, too. This all had to have a profound influence and inspiration on and for Errol.

Taz is seriously cute, and that necklace is serious bling, Tim. I am humbled and honored. I’m thinking I could wear it to jazz up my t-shirt-and jeans when I go for my daily walks. Not *too* flashy, right? LOL Your scientific clues finally got me thinking about Professor Flynn, even though that seemed like such a long shot. Another devilish quiz, in so many ways.

Jazzing (and Tazzing) up your t-shirts and jeans with your new Flynn bling is a fantaztic plan! Perhaps a microtouch too flashy for some, but with the wearin’-like-flynn, devil-may-care attitude it will still, you’ll enjoy every minute of it!
Regarding one of the more off-the-wall clues, the kangaroo clue, you may enjoy reading this pioneering scientific work of Professor Theo before you next hop up for your daily walk. He was really a brilliant man. No wonder why Errol was so proud of him.

I am presently unable to quote exactly the original source. of information regarding Professor Flynn’s fencing instruction in Hobart. (Young Errol Flynn by John Hammond Moore) But, there is a reference to it in the excellent Errol Flynn: Senses of Cinema: A Life at Sea.
“While Warner Bros. was later to spin the fictitious story that Flynn boxed in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam in order to promote his roles in The Perfect Specimen (Michael Curtiz, 1937) and especially Gentleman Jim (Raoul Walsh, 1942), where he portrayed the Irish-American boxer “Gentleman” Jim Corbett, former Australian Prime Minister John Gorton, who also attended [school with Errol] in 1926, remembers Flynn as “a first class boxer”. It’s also worth noting in relation to Flynn’s natural athleticism and later film roles, Moore’s observation that Professor Flynn gave fencing lessons to locals in Hobart. In our interview with him for the film, Sir Christopher Lee, who has engaged in more onscreen sword fights than any other living actor, attested to Errol’s swordsmanship…”
