Interesting brief (but pithy) sketch on the life of Flynn with particular emphasis on Cuba… and nice to see Rory quoted!

I am a DEFINITE fan of The Big Boodle- and to remind us all, here’s a most excellent review from one of our own resident authors:

PS It seems almost hard to believe that prodigious poundage quote of 21.5 stone (300 lbs)!

He looked slim and agile to me in The Big Boodle. If he was 300 lbs. how did the camera make him look so slim running around on the streets of Cuba and The Morro Castle scenes. Check your eye sight, sir. Great movie by the way. I watch it regularly just to look at Errol.

Thank-you David for this insightful article on Errol Flynn in Cuba. I thank Karl for sharing a review of “The Big Boodle” which I agree is excellent “film noir”. One aspect of the Gonzalez article is about Flynn looking as big as Orson Welles. A previous outstanding article in “FILM FAX” magazine “Errol Flynn’s Last Adventure” about the making of “Cuban Rebel Girls” has an interview with an actor in the cast. He said Errol Flynn had dropped considerable weight and looked as slim as he did back in the 1930’s! At the end of “Cuban Rebel Girls” Flynn gives an epilog and he is as thin as a rail. It is painfully obvious in that scene he is reading his lines from cue cards. I only disagree with Gonzalez’s opinion of “Crossed Swords” which was actually a hidden delight for many years.

I thought Errol looked great and crossed swords but could’ve lost a few pounds for the Warriors. It also seem to me that the filmmakers compensated for his weight by costuming other cast members in a way that made him look similar to them rather than the only one overweight.Of course, I am fascinated by Errol as an older man and wish like we all do that she had survived. I have always wished that he did more adventure travel films and could’ve found a great niche for himself if he had kept that up either and travel films or on television.

David, I agree. On “The Warriors” Errol looks recognizable while wearing his trademark mustache. When as the Black Prince, he shaves it off to go incognito, he does indeed look heavier and older!

We use to have a fellow over on the Zaca (an earlier iteration of a Flynn Group) and he had this REAL TALENT for reviewing films…

Anyway, I preserved these writings at the time and, with his advanced permissions, will share them here from time to time. This one in particular is from 2004:
