While watching TCM– North America–a USA cable channel and their tribute to Tyrone Power (they had already paid tribute to Mr. Flynn on the anniversary of his birth) I realized while watching “The Sun Also Rises” that it has been 55 years since Errol gave one of his career defining performances as “Mike Campbell”. Thank you, Inga. I did not know that any of the main actors was still alive. What I find most annoying about what some people say about his performance is that they say “he was just playing himself.” I say there is a big difference from playing a drunk than from being a drunk!–A. R.

No no, sorry for the misunderstanding, Mel is not alive anymore, but it would have been his birthday anyway. :-) You are right, even if Errol was playing himself, he was PLAYING himself, not BEING himself.

As a matter of trivia, although none of the main actors who starred with Errol in The Sun Also Rises are still alive, both Juliette Greco and Robert Evans who had prominent parts in the film are still with us!

Errol playing the character of Mike Campbell in this movie was great. I agree A.R. and Inga that he was playing himself and not being himself.
