Errol Flynn Oscar Nomination, Part 2

01 Feb

Errol arrived in Cincinnati Feb 2 1958. Then he went  to Cincinnati where he quits the Huntington Hartford play Master of Thornfield around the 19th of February, 1958. Official nominations for Oscars were announced around the 17th of February, 1958. As you can see, as of the 11th  of February nothing is official.

After Flynn left Cincinnati, it looks like he went to New York, Paris and off to Africa.

Errol wasn’t in LA at the time nominations were announced.

The answer could lie in a similar situation relating to Victor Mature and his performance in ‘The Robe’

Some of you would be familiar with James Robert Parish’s book ‘The Swashbucklers’, which has an interesting and insightful overview of the careers of 8 key actors – Errol (obviously) included. I remember reading in the chapter on Victor Mature an excerpt from an interview VM did in the early 1970s when he was asked if he regretted not winning an Oscar. He modestly stated that the only role where he may have been deserving of an Oscar was as Demetrius in The Robe and he confirmed that Darryl Zanuck refused to put him up in the supporting category insisting that there were only stars in The Robe (ie Jean Simmons, Richard Burton, VM & Michael Rennie).

The situation is almost identical with DFZ 4 years later with TSAR. Five stars – Tyrone Power, Ava Gardner, Mel Ferrer, EF & Eddie Albert – all billed above the title.

Interestingly, the chapter also states that at least one major columnist predicted VM would get nominated in the supporting actor category, just prior to the nominations being announced. Again, very similar to the situation with EF on the eve of the nominations

Well done! I think you have shown a pattern that applies to Errol as well and made a good case for it …
