Passing of Great Star and Actress Gina Lollobrigida

16 Jan

The famed Italian film actress and International movie star Gina Lollobrigida has died at age 95.  “Lollo” (nicknamed in her native Italy) starred in 67 films, including co-starring with Errol Flynn in the under-rated, comic swashbuckler, “Crossed Swords” (1954).  Miss Lollobrigida was by far a finer dramatic screen actress then her rival Sophia Loren.  On top of that Gina displayed a genuine, natural flair for comedy in such films as “Hotel Paradiso” (1966) with Alec Guiness and Robert Morley, the hilarious “Buona Sera Mrs. Campbell” (1967) with Peter Lawford, Phil Silvers, Telly Savalas, and Shelley Winters, and wartime laughs in “The Private Navy Of Sgt. O’Farrell” (1968) starring opposite lucky Bob Hope, with Jeffrey Hunter and Phyliss Diller!

Gina Lollobrigida’s passing means that as of this date there are only four, surviving leading ladies of Errol Flynn.  Whom?   Do not include the charming child actresses Patti Brady of “Never Say Goodbye” (1947), or Sherry Jackson from the unseen “Hello God” (1951), both of whom are still with us.

    Thanks, Ralph

That’s sad news about Gina – as for the others still with us I believe they are:
•Micheline Presle (The Adventures of Captain Fabian)
•Yvonne Furneaux (Master of Ballantrae and The Dark Avenger)
    •Rosanna Rory (The Big Boodle)

And I believe BOTH Antonella Lualdi & Waltraut Haas from the unfinished William Tell are also with us??

Robjack! Micheline Presle died just last year, My answers were Rosanna Rory, Antonella Lualdi and Waltraut Haas. However you are right gorgeous Yvonne Furneaux is still with us. I stand corrected.

Thanks Ralf – but I think Micheline is still with us! This may need a confirmation

Well, we can certainly expand the definition of a ‘leading lady’ to include Yvonne for sure!!

When they first met, Errol considered Gina (short for: Luigina) a freezer, since she reacted coldly to amorous overtones. No wonder, her credo was: “At 20 a woman is cold, at 30 she’s melting, only at 40 she really gets hot.“ RIP la Lollo.

      InCREDOble Heinz-

Modesty obviously forbade Luginia from going beyond the limits of her “intemporate” characterizations but NOT a certain SHOCKING fellow by the name Clemens… YIKES!

“From the time a woman is seven years old till she dies of old age, she is ready for action, and competent. As competent as the candlestick to receive the candle. But man is only briefly competent:…After fifty his performance is of poor quality; the intervals between are wide, and its satisfactions of no great quality to either party; whereas his great-grandmother is as good as new.”

KK, as much as I like Twain‘s usual marky remarks, I find this cranky comment off the charts. Probably perceived while sitting not on a candlestick, but on Nicola Tesla‘s lightning rod against indigestion. Here is Gina Nazionale striking a pose much like mentioned by Hedy in Tom McNulty‘s green book.

As yes, the passage (in EFTLAC)… “the little dab will do you” story.

As to the “marky” Mark quote, I was only familiar with 2nd half which more addressed a woman of Ms. Nationale’s vintage yet when I went a looking and found the more “complete” passage and used it without a fuller explanation…

Herewith, the backstory to this rather arresting re-MARK:

“Nearing the end of Mark Twain’s life, he wrote a series of humorous essays on Judeo-Christian theology, including The Diaries of Adam and Eve and Letters from Earth, which were posthumously published. In the book Satan, who still resides with the rest of the heavenly hosts, takes a trip to Earth. This book consists of eleven letters he writes back to archangels Gabriel and Michael with his thoughts on humanity, Judeo-Christian scripture and morality. When Mark Twain wrote these essays, he was deeply in debt, had just lost his wife and one of his daughters; therefore, one can imagine that he might be despondent.”

PS You may recall, to HIS credit, the Flynn story of his young co-star in Hello God, being given a nickel and asked to call in 10 years.

Thanks Ralph – so did Micheline on her 100th birthday?? From what I can see she was born on 22 August 1922. Still no site records her death – according to Wikipedia and IMDB she is still with us

No Robjack, I had it wrong. I misread the birthdate on Wikipedia as her date of death. You are in fact right Robjack, this leading lady of both Errol Flynn and Tyrone Power is alive and will turn 101 years old this year! God bless her. Get me that Spring water,
