Errol Flynn from Early October to end of December 1955!

08 Nov

Including a blow-up of ‘piggy-back’ Flynn on the “rag” cover of  On the QT.

Re-enacting Robin Hood riding the shoulders of “Frier Tuck”!

Thank-you Topper for showing the near-misses of Errol Flynn’s late career. “The Warriors” is the title for the US release but the British title “The Dark Avenger” is correct for this 1955 swashbuckler, Flynn’s last (except for a rollicking 1956 TV episode from the “Screen Directors Playhouse”, “The Sword Of Villon”. “King’s Rhapsody”, based on an Ivor Novello novel and West End theater musical hit, has Errol Flynn doing first-rate dramatic work, while Anna Neagle sings to him and Patrice Wymore dances around him, both using him for a prop! Neagle later said in an interview for a documentary on Flynn that he was misbehaving because he felt ill used.

Just a few Fun-Flynn-Facts! Errol starred in just 5 pictures that were filmed in Wide Screen CinemaScope :THE WARRIORS, KING’S RHAPSODY, ISTANBUL, THE SUN ALSO RISES, and THE ROOTS OF HEAVEN. Of these 5. only ISTANBUL has yet to see a DVD release–in fact I believe it is the ONLY Flynn film that hasn’t been given a formal release (except for a long-ago VHS from Universal). In comparison, CinemaScope found Humphrey Bogart making only one, with THE LEFT HAND OF GOD (FOX 1955). Clark Gable made just three, with 2 also from FOX-SOLDIER OF FORTUNE, and THE TALL MEN , both 1955, with the third THE KING AND FOUR QUEENS (UA, 1956). Nice to know that Errol starred in some ‘big- box- office’ titles at the end! (we don’t need to mention CUBAN REBEL GIRLS (1959), do we??

No Cuban Rebel Girls…but… there is the 30 minutes, without sound, of William Tell still floating around in existence,
In my meeting with Roddy McDowell in December, 1990 we discussed the fact that he had seen it in Boston a few years earlier. He commented that “it had promise. So sad,”

Hello! I am really enjoying your book here, in different segments and I was wondering if it would be available to purchase a physical copy of it’s entirety?

By the way, “The Perfect Specimen” (1937) was never released on DVD or Blu-ray. In fact it is never telecast on Turner Classic Movies.

Try getting Robert Florczak’s book “Errol Flynn: The Illustrated Life Chronology” !
