Errol standing in for Walter Winchell. “Things You Never Knew About Ships” – published in the Summer of 1940, during the spectacularly popular (first) release of “Sea Hawk” – which was released a second time – again to great popularity – in 1947. When they re released The Sea Hawk they thought it was too long in its original form so they cut it to blases and ruined the movie all together. A lot of the little quips where gone and one whole scene was missing. It was not until 1974 that they released it once again in its original form and so it should be.For those that have not seen the original version give it a look you will be pleasantly surprised. Thanks, Genene. I love the Sea Hawk. Errol’s at an athletic peak, and Erich Korngold’s musical score is absolutely majestic.
You’ve inspired me to watch the film again – perhaps in both versions – alert for all the differences you point out – including for the quips and missing scene, as well as for the sepia-tinted jungle scenes. Additionally, I’m going to look for all the anti-Nazi symbolism, references and allusions.
Last saw the film in its entirety, I believe, on the mainsail of the “Star of India” in San Diego Harbor. That was quite something to see.
