Going south of Baja some:  Here, on a cliff over Acapulco Bay, is the legendary Hollywood Gang’s legendary Hotel Los Flamingos, “where Errol Flynn tirelessly romanced …”

And here’s how it appeared in “The Lady from Shanghai”:

    reelsf.com…

(With Errol and the Zaca nearby at the time, I believe.)

hmmmm,it doesn’t really look much like him.I remember reading somewhere that he is said to be in a scene (near the very end of the movie) talking on the phone with his back to the camera as Orson Welles walks past? But I don’t know if that’s true or not.My brother has this movie though,so I will have a look to try & see him.

Hope you find him, Lollie! I agree with you that this fellow said to be Flynn doesn’t look much like Flynn – not even much of a Stand-In (Like) Flynn.

A concern has been expressed regarding the legitimacy of whether Errol actually visited Hotel Los Flamingos, or not. As I was not actually there during his reported visits, I can not say definitively one way or the other. A great deal of anecdotal evidence – in history and tourist books, articles, and the like – does very strongly indicate that he was there, however, along with other members of the “Hollywood Gang”, including, most notably, John Wayne, Johnny Weismuller & Cary Grant. Dolores Del Rio is reported to have a connection to the hotel, as well. It appears “The Lady from Shanghai” may provide an additional evidence, as we all know Errol’s certain and significant connection to that film, and Orson Welles reported use of the hotel both for and in the movie.

As I hope to provide further information I find as a result of research involving Errol’s possible presence & activities in Mexico (and elsewhere), please keep in mind, I have absolutely no first hand knowledge regarding his actual presence and activities. With Errol especially, this 100% certitude is impossible. I do assure you, though, I very carefully research everything I post before posting. Even so, I very strongly encourage everyone to investigate whatever facts and evidence may be in question. And I will absolutely correct or modulate anything found to be in error or misleading. I want no one to be misinformed or misled in any way. Errol’s life needs no embellishment.

Other specific locations I am researching regarding Errol’s travels to and near Acapulco include:

    Acapulco Bay

    Acapulco Yacht Club

    Caleta

Caletilla Beach (Playa Caletilla)(Including Bar & Bathhouse above the Beach)

    Casablanca Hotel (Freddy Staufer’s)

First Tennis Courts in Acapulco (Build by Errol)

Floating Gardens of Xochilio (Mexico City)

    Hotel La Marina

Hotel La Mirador/La Perla Nightclub (Stauffer’s)

    Hotel La Riviera

    Pacific Ocean Offshore Fishing Waters

    Puerto Margues (several hours distant)

    Villa Vera Hotel (Teddy Stauffer’s)

Anyone who wants to contribute information concerning Errol’s connection to these locations is very welcome to do so – please do!

Here’s a fun travelogue video of Acapulco, much as Flynn would have seen it – from James A. FitzPatrick’s (“The Voice of the Globe”) TravelTalks:

Here’s a video tribute to some of the many stars who have visited the Hotel Los Flamingos, home of the legendary “Hollywood Gang Hideaway”, where Errol has long been reported to have been a preeminent member.

Isn’t it sad somehow that they have to tell people who Johnny Weissmuller was…

Sad, indeed, Inga. It’s a jungle out there – even for Kings.

Lovely Rita on the Zaca, believed to be nearby Acapulco. Errol nearby, too:

Errol may have been keeping a close-eye on Rita, too, it appears. … By the way, that fellow next to Orson at Rita’s birthday party looks much like the actor mistakenly identified by others as Errol in that ‘Lady from Shanghai’ scene referenced and pictured above (at what is believed to be the site of the Hotel Los Flamingos.) Anybody know who he is? (.. In addition to sharing Rita’s cake, it looks as he may have shared some of her bleach, too.)

I guess Orson felt most safe while Errol did all the aerial filming!

Hey yeah, that man does look like the man in the scene said to be Errol.

Yes, Lollie, it’s certainly not Errol in that scene, and Robert has now let us know who it was – Errol’s sidekick, Germany’s Swing King, Teddy Stauffer – aka “Mr. Acapulco”!

The man is Swiss bandleader, Teddy Stauffer.

Thanks for that great ID, Robert!

Been reading quite a bit about “Mr. Acapulco” lately. From his ‘escape’ from Europe to his days with Flynn, together transforming Acapulco into the celebrated destination it became.

Interestingly – something these images of Rita & Stauffer (on the Zaca, and in “Shanghai” appear to presage – Rita eventually coupled up with Teddy, who dated and married quite a few beauties.

In Errol’s honor, I think I’ll have a Coco Loco when I get down to Acapulco!
