Errol’s Menagerie & Lifelong Love of Pets

11 Dec

FLYNN

FLYNN We all know Errol Loved his pets … and they Loved him! … That being the case …

With the double-digits & wonderful spirit of December now upon us, I’d like to initiate an identification of and tribute to Errol’s astonishing lifelong menagerie of pets – his dogs, his horses, his cats, his monkeys, his parrots, his goats, his pigs, his fox, his lion cub, his peacocks, his sheep, his snake(s), and all others – commencing with ‘Man (or perhaps Dog) Friday’ and whatever native pets he may have had in Tasmania and mainland Australia – including, of course, any of the very rarely kept Tasmanian Devils or Tigers, platypodes, wallabies, kangaroos, and/or any other indigenous ‘pets’ he may have ‘held’ for any length of time through his father. And, as some of us will recall, he once had some ducks.

Together, with this identification of pets, it would be wonderful to include any photos, descriptions, and stories of interest, including how Errol came to obtain his pets, how he named them, where and when they were in his life, whatever happened to them, etc.

Also, any thoughts/feelings about what Errol’s profound love of animals said about him as a person??

To start things off, here’s one of many wonderful relevant photos! Anyone know the story on this one? Perhaps at Mulholland??

Errol with Goat and Dog

All photos & stories regarding Daisy (aka Man Friday), Arno, Onyx, Moody, Bes-Mudi (aka Bes Nov, Bes Novi & Besnovitch), Chula, Greno, Cold Nose, Peewee, Jack & Mike, Guyceewee, (and all others!) are greatly welcomed and encouraged!

P.S. Isn’t it intriguing that the Flynn coat-of-arms includes an heraldic canine, as on the elegant trivet at the top of this tab!?! Errol surely knew and appreciated that, of course.

THANK YOU TO TINA FOR THE GREAT PHOTO OF ERROL ABOVE!!!

Thanks for starting this thread Tim,I look forward to reading everyone’s answers & comments as I love seeing photos of Errol with his pets and other animals.I think Errol’s love for his animals shows what a caring, lovely man he was.I remember reading that the photo posted of Errol with the little baby goat & puppy was taken at Mulholland Farm and that the Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy Errol is holding (or Lion Hounds which I think they were called back then?) was part of one of the very first litters of that breed born in America.I remember reading also that Errol is riding his horse Onyx in San Antonio & when I watched it a while ago I remember hearing him call Onyx by name.I am interested to read/learn more here about Errol’s dogs, especially his fave Arno.I always wondered if Errol named him after an Australian biscuit which was very popular in his time here (and still is now) called Arno Shortbread.Does anyone know how he named Arno? I’ve not read it anywhere before. :)

So much great info there, Lollie! Thank you!!

I don’t know how Arno got his name, but you’re Arno Australian biscuit lead is a fascinating lead!!! I recall it was Robert Lord – one of the Warner executives involved in the selection of Errol to play Captain Blood (along with JW, Hal Wallis, and one of the Warner brothers, I believe) – who may have given Errol Arno, but he may have not had a name, or maybe had a different name, initially? Anybody know? Errol often called Arno “my little mutt”, I believe, and, as we all here know, was one of Errol’s most faithful, fun, and beloved friends.

Errol must have been one of the “Arnott Brigade”, Lollie! Maybe even the one pictured holding up the dumbells! (A sign of things to come, perhaps!)

As you surely know, Lollie, here’s Errol having a good time showing some of his “Rhodesian Lion Hounds”, as they were identified that day. I’m not sure, but some or all these may have been born during filming of Robin Hood. From information on the net, including on a couple of other threads here on EFB, the ones he brought over from England (the first in the U.S. perhaps) may have been named after Jack & Mike. That, of course, sounds suspiciously like a couple of guys from WB! Here’s some good EFB links on Errol’s Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Thanks to all those who contributed to those! – Anonymous(es), Brenda, Brian, Denise, Inga, Terry & Tina – all of whom are very welcome to contribute again here.

I love that photo of Errol & Arno, Lollie! Thanks for posting it!!

With regard to Onyx, do you have any photos or links to him?

Can he be seen in this trailer from San Antonio, which you mentioned above as including Onyx?*

          www.tcm.com…

Is this Onyx in Dodge City, or another of Errol’s astounding menagerie?

And how about in this wonderful photo with Sean?

          * For what it’s worth (nothing monetary I assure you!), my maternal grandfather was a relative of Paul Kelly, one of Errol’s San Antonio co-stars, and also Gene Tierney – who were both originally from Old Brooklyn, where I too was born. He knew Kelly (in his Vitagraph days), and most of Tierney’s family, but not Gene herself, who moved to Connecticut very young.

Hi Tim, I don’ t think that’s Onyx in Dodge City as that horse looks bay coloured? Same with the lovely horse in that great photo of Errol & Sean together? It’s hard to pick him out in the s
San Antonio clip as they go past so quickly, but I remember there’s a scene in San Antonio where Errol’s character Clay is with his friend Charlie (the same actor is in Dodge City too) and he (Charlie) is originally riding Onyx; I think it’s in that very scene too that you can hear Errol call him Onyx, he is very glossy pitch black and really
beautiful. Later in the movie after Charlie is killed, Errol/Clay is riding
            Onyx, extremely well too. :)

P.S. That is very interesting that you are related to that actor Paul Kelly & to Gene Tierney (I love her in The Ghost & Mrs Muir),what a great connection to have. :)

Thank you for that great info, Lollie! With it, I bet we can find a good still and/or moving image of Onyx! He certainly deserves commemoration!

With respect to my family ‘connections’ to Paul Kelly & Gene Tierney, they were rather attenuated by the time I came on the scene! Back in the mid-1880’s, one of the Tierneys – served as best man at my great-grandfather’s wedding. He was a cousin to the groom. The bride’s family was in the theater business, back when the New York theater district was on the Bowery. Regarding Paul Kelly, he was my grandfather’s cousin, who became a child star with Vitagraph Pictures, when they were in Brooklyn. It’s not certain whether he was helped into the business through family relations, or not – but I think so. With Gene Tierney it was different – I believe her father became very successful (in the insurance industry I think) and her family moved away to Connecticut when she was very young. I remember her aunt’s very impressive home near very upscale St. Mark’s Place in Brooklyn though, where she would often visit. It’s still there, though no one I met in the much-changed neighborhood recalls the connection today.

And I don’t know how to save screen caps (from San Antonio) to the computer either.Bes-Mudi must have been a good relaxed cat to be out on the yacht with all that water around.Errol had some very interesting names for some of his pets didn’t he. :)

Moving along alphabetically (by name, not species – Arno on …), we have Errol’s distinguishlyly-bred Siamese cat Bes-Mudi, which is sometinmes also referred to (either correctly or incorrectly) as Besnovitch, Bes Nov, Bes Nova. Given to him by make-up artist Ward Hamilton, while Errol was married to Nora, I believe. The results of superb prior research has been previously provided by EFB authors Mary Ann, Tassie Devil & Tina. Thank you Ladies! The goal of this thread being a summary of information for future researchers regarding all of Errol’s pets, I therefore include the below links:

Bes Mudi, Errol’s Mascot on the Zaca

Here is an Australian Team named after Errol’s cat, Bes Mudi

Guyceewee came aboard the Zaca with Chula – Errol’s dachshund – brought by Nora to the Santa Monica Pier for what would ultimately be known as the “Cruise of the Zaca” – IMO, one of The Great Flynn’s masterpieces. During this Errolian adventure, Chula made her (quite outstanding) Hollywood debut, starring with Orson Welles & Rita Hayworth in The Lady from Shanghai. She can be seen quite a bit between 11:30 & 12:45 in the video below. Her perfectly-timed, scene-stealing yelp at ~12:30, adds great, animated comic relief to this Wellesian classic. They didn’t give them in those days, but, if they had, she no doubt would have gotten the Oscar for Best Supporting Dachshund in a Film Noir Film. Despite her dogged-determination, however, she never did get the Oscar she deserved. …. She was in excellent company.

And here, I believe, is the often-overlooked cocker spaniel Guyceewee! I wonder if there’s a French connection behind the name? Around during the days of Lili, anyone out there know what might sound like Guyceewee in French? – or another possible explanation of this name??

    hr-hr.facebook.com…

BTW, forgot to include above Arno was apparently a standard Schnauzer, though often described as a miniature schnauzer, and often called by Errol a “mutt”.

As always, all corrections, clarifications, and additions, encouraged!

      December 17, 2013 at 6:30 pm

It seems as if Guyceewee was more like Lili’s dog, and on discussing it Robert and I agreed it was possibly first named Guy, with the French pronunciation ending in the [i]-sound, not [ai] as it is pronounced in English. Then, Robert added, in time, he was probably called Guycee and soon the “wee” as sign of cuty-ness was included.

      • Tim

        December 17, 2013 at 9:33 pm

Thanks you very much to you & Robert for that ‘information ingenieux’ , Inga! Hard to know anything with certainty, of course, but, perhaps, the “cee” part may have been play on the uniquely French word “si” – which is sort of a “conditional yes” (meaning “if so, yes”). If so, so to speak, then ‘wee’ may have also had the double (or triple) entendre of ‘wee” (for small and/or “cutee-ness”), and “oui”, for, once again, a play on the French “oui”!?! Yes/Oui?

While we have you and we’re talking French, Inga, this seems like a marvelous time to mention Errol’s cocker spaniel “Greno” – given to him & Patrice by Claude McEvoy (Freddie’s wife) as a wedding gift, at the reception in Nice you have previously researched & written about so extraordinarily well. Here is a tremendous photo I believe you researched and provided to the EFB. Can you explain any of its details for us? … Is that Greno? Is that Claude (i.e. Mrs. McEvoy – the Moroccan model who died so tragically at sea not so long afterwards, despite Freddie’s Herculean-like heroic efforts.) Is that Greno champagne? Additionally – while we are so fortunate to have you! – Is this Greno also in this second picture with Patrice?

Please forgive my Deutsch, Inga, but it would be especially beteutend, too, if you could provide any input you may want to regarding Errol’s German breeds! – Cold Nose, his German Shepard – his Doberman – his dachshund(s?) – and any others – German or otherwise!! Danke!

        • Inga

          December 18, 2013 at 6:21 pm

Robert and I think Guyceewee is just a pun without any deeper meaning. :-)
As for Greno, the article I used as a source mentioned it was a cocker. The dog on the first photo, which is from that article, may be a cocker, but somehow it looks also a bit like a dachshund. The one with Patrice is certainly a small dachshund. To me, both dogs look a little bit alike, but then if this is Greno he cannot have been a cocker. I would also say that the lady christening the dog is Patrice and the bottle she’s holding might be a small Greno champagne bottle. I can have a look at the original article when I find some time and especially when I find the article!
Regarding Cold Nose, I’ve never come across anything more detailed than several photos, which I regret a lot because it interests me, too, where EF got him from, how long he lived etc. There are the famous promotional photos with EF and CN and Waltraut Haas, of course. The doberman is on several promotional photos at Mulholland after the trial, but again, no additional more specific information, I’m sorry. I think that Arno and the Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the only ones where we have rough “acquisition dates”, and of course, the time of Arno’s death, but the others will probably forever remain unsolved as for the question when the entered and left Errol’s life.

With her being a Errol’s Best Man’s wife and the only person we can specifically identify and date as far as giving Errol a pet, I thought it would be nice to have a photo of Claude in Nice – or anywhere else. As such a legendarily beautiful French (and/or Algerian) model, I suspect there must still be great photos of her around. With your excellent work researching the wedding in Nice I thought you may have come across some.

Meant to reaffirm, Inga, that I too believe Guyceewee is likely a pun – a rhyming pun- with a French twist. I too believe it’s most likely the French Guy, – pronounced ‘gee’. Then possibly cee is for the French ‘si’, followed by wee for ‘oui’, with wee also serving as a diminutive. We may never know for sure, but it does appear EF may have been quite a punster!

Regarding the photo of Errol receiving Guyceewee, my curiosity was piqued regarding what exactly Claude McEvoy looked like. She’s always said to have been quite beautiful, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen her. Looked for her in this video, but not sure she’s there, though I think that may be Freddie in the foreground:

Thanks, Inga. I don’t have it, nor have I read it (yet), but it’s certainly on my list to peruse before my next visit to LA!!! Looks like an especially great book for EF-philes.

To me, Moody always looks more moody than Arno – as well as more shy. Physically very close, though – which must have been deliberate on Errol’s part. … I think I may have read somewhere once that David Niven was a witness to when Errol bought Moody, Evidently Errol had had several libations beforehand. In fact, if I recall correctly, he said he knew Errol to purchace pets while drinking on a few occasions. … So, I’d bet Errol was feeling exceptionally sentimental over Arno when he purchased Moody.

And here’s a wonderful photo of Errol & Ida with Moody & Duchess. I believe the four of them would get together on occasion at Mulholland and elsewhere, including on sailing adventures in the Pacific, where, on the Sirocco, they would fly the skull & crossbones. Ida, of course, was one of Errol’s great friends.

BTW, can anyone describe the visual physical differences between Arno & Moody – breed, size, coloring, etc?

I think I read it was the Sirocco on which Errol & Ida used to fly the skull & crossbones, before Errol bought the Zaca after the War, but either my recollection or possibly the source could be wrong – or maybe they did so on both craft. … I do recall reading that, at least when Errol first got the Zaca, he aimed to make it known as a much more serious vessel, even insisting it not be referred to as a “yacht”, but rather a ship.

I think Arno & Moody were probably both Standard Schnauzers, as close in looks possibly as Errol could find – at least, if what Niv said was true, while he was in the mood to buy Moody.

Same here Lollie! .. They’re kind of like Schnauzers – smarter than us (or at least me!) in many ways: they’re really kind of in charge, though we’re purportedly the top dogs!

Like many of us, Lollie, Errol had to sometimes consult and seek cross-species guidance. Here he his below going over some trouble-spots in his Siver City script, or perhaps Lili’s most recent legal filing, with a monkey. I believe this particular primate probably predates his ring-tailed pet he brought on the “Cruise of the Zaca”. … Perhaps it was one he picked-up during a visit to Monkey Island on Cahuenga Boulveard.

Errol used to sometimes have John Barrymore’s pet monkey, Clemmie, out sailing with him, once commenting that he was very good in the crow’s nest (I think he meant Clemmie, not JB.)

As Errol once wisely observed, ~ ‘When dealing with monkeys, one must expect a few wrenches.”

And then there were Errol’s pet parrots – one of which spoke “fluent San Blas Indian”, according to “Inside Hollywood” reporter Fredda Dudley Balling circa 1947, in a “Movie Show” magazine article entitled “Count on Errol”. … Errol apparently acquired this rare bird midway through his Cruise of the Zaca, in or near Panama, on an island inhabited by the (then rather infamous) San Blas Indians. It’s name is unknown to me, as is its exact physical description. … Perhaps the fine feathered fellow in this early-50’s photo from Jamaica below is a distant cousin, Man:

Coincidently, Fredda joined Hedda and other distaff Hollywood “entertainment” writers and once proposed giving Errol & Bing Crosby and a few select others a “Stuffed Bird” award, for not being fully cooperative (really meaning “intimidated”) with (“brushing off”) the Tinsel Town gossip gang. … Bing loved it, as I’m sure Errol did also! … Errol was considered the “annual winner”. .. Instead of a ‘stuffed bird”, Bing got a “stuffed shirt” (stuffed with straw).

Thanks so much, Lollie. That’s very nice of you to say. And so observant & true that Errol’s pets led interesting lives – as did many of his ‘peeves’ as well! … even likely his lion cub in Chicago, though none of us know (including Errol himself) whatever happened to her!

… David had previously posted the above photo of Errol reading the the Silver River script to his simian sidekick, with Inga contributing this somewhat similar one in sepia – sibilantly speaking. Thank you David & Inga!!

Errol lost his “first dog”* in the jungles on or near the infamous Black Cat Trail. His name was “Pikis” – meaning “little croc” in the native language of Papua New Guinea. He was small dog with “a ferocious snarl and a snap” – with “a tail like a jaunty question mark”! Some second hand accounts have him devoured by a (big) crocodile. Errol, however, attributed his death to poisonous gas emitted from the roots of the indigenous kunai grass. Pictured below are Japanese soldiers making their way through kunai grass from one of the very regions Errol may have traversed, an area of extremely fierce fighting during WWII.

    bit.ly/1kqNt5i…

    * I believe by “first”, Errol means as an independent adult. He had Daisy at age four, but, which perhaps, he regarded more of a family pet than his own?

    Hi Tim;
The crest is a “Flynn Crest” and there are many Flynn Crests. One would need to know the exact Flynn lineage to establish to which family belongs which crest. Maybe you can find out! Flynn is a very common name in Ireland and this crest it is not Errol’s Crest!
Mostly a family crest only have people who are of nobility or received the privilege for a very special reason of a distinguished service.
You are very good in tracing things maybe you could find out if Errol stems from Irish Nobility? But don’t forget that I have Errol’s family genealogy from his mothers and father’s side.
But it is very nice that you award Errol with crest! I like it!
In addition, I am very flattered that you use MY PICTURE of Errol with the lamb. You see, there are so many pictures of Errol with a cigarette in his mouth and I took out of some pictures the cigarette and this is one of them. Needless to say, I was scolded for doing it and rightly so as I was defacing public property. I just disliked seeing him always with a cigarette in so many pictures. I will publish the right one and you can exchange it.
    Take care!

Thank you, Tina, for your genealogical info & expertise. I am aware that familiy crests were historically primarily for royalty & aristocracy, not commoners. But that practice, at least here in the former colonies, has long since been discarded. Errol – as he was so especially uncommon – deserves his own, very special crest, so I “gave” him one – one apropos to the Pet theme of this thread.

Didn’t know you removed the cig from Errol’s mouth. I dont know how I feel about that! – probably depends on the particular context, significance, and artistic qualities of the image. It’s kind of a fig leaf thing, isn’t it?

        Hi Tim;
I sure like your fig leave explanation and makes me feel a little better about the deformation I did.
Anyway here is the original and you can exchange it or just leave it as is – your choice. I have a lot more animal pictures and may post them as I have energy. As I am just recuperating from cancer and feel not on top of the world.
