Mailbag! New Errol Flynn Movie in the Works!

13 Dec

We just received this note from the Errol Flynn Estate about a forthcoming new film featuring Errol in his prime years.

Hi David, the Errol Flynn Estate has entered into a deal this past June with a Major Production company to produce a film about Errol’s best years 1935-1939.  We can’t give too much info because we are waiting for the script to be finnished before we go to the press. But I think it would be ok to let your readers know that Jack Huston is the front runner for the role as Errol.

Regards, Robb Callahan

Those really are Errol’s best years (with “The Sea Hawk” still ahead of him) so this could be fun. I don’t know Jack Huston’s work but he has an interesting look that actually does remind me of Errol. (Timothy Dalton as Prince Barin in “Flash Gordon” came the closest to a modern day version of Errol.) My suggestion/hope is that when it comes to the swashbuckling scenes that, instead of “recreating” the old style look, that the filmmakers instead recreate the FEEL of Errol’s films. Use modern CGI to give us the greatest pirate ship battle we’ve ever seen.(Which is how it FELT to see Errol’s films when they came out.) Regardless of how they achieve it, I look forward to any project which keeps Errol’s memory alive. The funny thing about casting someone as Errol (whoever it is in the end) is that there’s never been anyone who genuinely comes close to the dashing heroism that Errol projected with such ease. But I do wish them the best of luck. (Don’t count out fellow Aussie Hugh Jackman. He may not be in his twenties but he’s still young enough to play Errol at his height. I remember people arguing that Mel Gibson was too old to play Braveheart and look how that turned out.)

Wow that’s great, another one to look forward to! I hadn’t ever heard of Jack Huston, but he looks like he could resemble Errol quite well hopefully,if he gets the role.Be great if they cast Luke Flynn though,or Tim’s suggestion of Chris Hemsworth, the more I look at him the more I think he’d make a perfect choice to play Errol. :)

One of the Flynns would be so cool, Lollie! The Huston connection ILIKEFLYNN points out sounds pretty cool, too. Hope Jack doesn’t hold a grudge over Errol kicking his grandfather’s butt! After all, Johnny Huston didn’t, and did give Errol a very good battle of it!!

Seeing Chris Hemsworth in “Rush” leaft no doubt in my mind he could be a great heyday-era Flynn. Went and saw him subsequently in the even more recent Thor, and it’s completely different. He’s good in that role, but it’s much different – he’s too over-muscular and artificially deep-voiced for Errol. But, in Rush – he’s GREAT, and a perfect candidate for Errol – even with the humor and way with the ladies. Hopefully, Jack Huston can match that. All they need now is Drew Barrymore and/or one of the Hemingway girls to do a cameo of Marelle, or Madge Parks or even Hedda Hopper – or somebody. Any young Rathbones running around? … And, now, for the million dollar settlement question, who plays Tiger Lil?!? (Berenese Bejo?) … And why not even a flashback to Ting Ling (Mylene Jampanoi?)! – before Errol was on top.

Did some research on Jack Huston (as I had never heard of him) and according to WikiPedia and IMDB, as I had guessed, he is related to the Hustons of Hollywood. He is, they say, the grandson of Errol’s old fighting and drinking buddy and one time director, John Huston. He is best known for his part in the “Twilight” movies and for a part in the HBO cable network show, “Boardwalk Empire”.
In the pictures, I have seen of him, I would never have picked him for “Errol”, but I am sure his profile will rise, as he is in the new critically acclaimed release, “American Hustle” with Jennifer Lawrence and Amy Adams.–A. R.
(BTW, I did like the picture of Timothy Dalton and Ornella Muti (she is really sexy in this picture as Ming’s daughter–the “bad girl”) from Dino deLaurentiis’ “Flash Gordon”! I do remember thinking the first time I saw “Flash Gordon’ how much like Flynn, Daltons’ Prince Barin looked and acted. And lest we forget Dalton did get to play an Errol Flynn type actor in “The Rocketeer”! (Albeit as a villainous Errol Flynn.)

Saw American Hustle this weekend. Fun & very well written with suberb acting by Chistian Bale, Amy Adams, Brad Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner & Mr. D. Jack Huston plays a New Jersey Mafioso lieutenant.

Huston gives a good performance but, in my estimation, doesn’t manifest the roughness normally associated with such figures. Being from Brooklyn and living through the era depicted, I say that with some knowledge & experience! Mr. D, on the other hand, is spot on.

Despite his fantastic pedigree, Jack Huston does not appear to me to have the physicality and toughness requisite to properly play Errol at his physical peak. To me, Jack Huston appears to be too delicate to fully/properly/convincingly play Errol. Neither does he look to have the depth of character nor ruggedness of Walter & John. Doesn’t look like he could have survived the jungles of New Guinea, lead pirates onto a Spanish Galleon in the great Flynn style, … nor handle Tiger Lil!.

I think and suggest there are better candidates for this plum role. Give Chris Hemsworth a call!

Boy oh boy I sure hope I don’t get bad mail here, but to me, I am going to be the odd man out; meaning I don’t want another Flynn movie, none have ever come up to the standards of Himself, and none will.
By doing these sorts, amateurish, in my view, because again, none have ever come up to his standard, they, and as if almost done to try to mark these films with the cheap remarks they once did when he was alive; “not a good actor!”… or, ” not an actor to take as a serious one, mainly a costume actor!”… etc.

They should leave it alone. They want to do something real and will bring his name back to peoples mind in a big way? Give him a special salute and the Academy Award, and Lifetime Achievement Award. This will make headlines, not these want-a-be makes of one that can’t be capture in a bottle…

I believe Guy Pierce and 99.944% of everyone who saw him take a swing at Flynn might agree with you, Sergio.

P.S. You being a man of music and song, Sergio, can you please explain what the hell the singing of this Great War veterans ballad has to do with Errol Flynn? Guy Pearce looks like he has no clue either.

I’m Sorry GT I have no clue as to why they came up with that soundtrack? Either they knew something we did not; they being so involve in the project lost sight of the outside world – or the composer simply did not get what and who. With that being said, neither did the producer…
As far as thinking ? But I can assure you I would have written something more suitable to fit the films relations….

This sounds great and I sincerely hope that they will do a GREAT job, this time around, as all the other trials so far of portraying Errol are always just something to wish for. Never the real heart of Errol!
If the Errol Flynn Estate is planning a great movie about Errol I would suggest that they look up CLIVE STANDEN.
He has a resemblance to Errol, played Robin Hood in a British series, I think is was called THE ARCHER. I never had the pleasure to see it.
He was born on July 22, 1981, in Holywood (hahaha) County Down, Northern Irland.
And here are some images, I think they speak for themselves.
    What is your opinion?

Excellent recommendation, Tina! If he’s going to play Errol in the late 1930s, though, they’d better sign and film him fast!!

        Right you are Tim!
This is absolutely a great biography as there are similarities of Errol in it and AAH they even quote Errol.

The BBC TV series Robin Hood; a role which brought Standen much critical acclaim with many of the national press comparing Standen’s charming but edgy performance and seemingly effortless sword fighting Skill to Errol Flynn.

        I missed that biography.
Yes, he would be the best choice in my humble opinion!
But of course as you say, the years are marching on for him too, so they better hurry to get this guy! But then there is always Hollywood know-how and make up!

Years ago we had a discussion about this subject too as to which actor would be best to play Errol and I suggested then already Clive Standen. I think his looks and general persona are similar. Yeah, the Irish sure got it! But I could be wrong,
I thought this is a funny picture, the dog and the bow tie as Errol used
to wear bow ties and his love for dogs.
