Box Office

25 Apr

Here is a link to a nifty box office list for Flynn.  It even mentions this blog. Since there were only half as many people living on the planet at that time you really have to double the numbers I think even though they are adjusted for inflation

Wow. “Adventures of Don Juan” was 17th? “Dawn Patrol” 16th? “Thank Your Lucky Stars” was 5th? (He was wonderful in his cameo, so it’s nice to know so many saw it. But still…)
But “The Adventures of Robin Hood” is 1st, as it should be. I think the missing list are the missing Oscar nominations.
    1. “The Adventures of Robin Hood” – Modern day Shakespeare which Flynn handled with ease. I’d have followed him into battle.
    2. “The Sea Hawk” – Perhaps Flynn’s most assured, understated performance. He’s so good that he makes it look easy.
    3. “The Dawn Patrol” – Arguably Flynn’s greatest dramatic performance.
    4. “The Sun Also Rises” – He SHOULD have been nominated for this. Too bad. But his legend outlived them all.

Thanks, twinarchers. It’s very interesting and informative to see the raw data on these films, like the box office proceeds. Even raw data, as I know all of us here know, needs to be closely and contexually examined. For instance, someone not very familiar with Errol’s history may conclude his (terrific) performance in Lucky Stars was more popular than his (immortal) performance in Captain Blood. … What really needs the most explanation (and overhaul), though, is the Cogerson Movie Score! How on earth (or in heaven for that matter) can Tom Hanks have made 10 (TEN!) movies better than Errol’s Robin Hood!!!!!!!!!!! … I guess movie scores are like a box of chocolates.
