After watching Against All Flags I had to put on Master Of Ballantrae. I have to admit that with location shooting, Cardiff filming it and maybe a larger budget if stands up better than Flags.
Even the matte painter is famous. You can see two of them below. My question is I have a DVD that is several years old and it is now available as a Warner Archive DVD. Is it the same transfer or a new one that is better? The old one looks pretty good but you never know. I will certainly get the Blu Ray if it comes out but not another DVD unless its far superior. Does anyone have both versions? Thanks
PS I found Yvonne Furneaux sexier than Beatrice Campbell. No wonder he was seeing her on the side.
She should have been the female lead I think.

As far as I know, twinarchers, the Warner Archive version is the same transfer as the earlier one. Studios will rarely invest in the high cost of restoring and upgrading a film if that cost is unlikely to be defrayed by consumer purchases. This is why, by the way, we are unlikely to ever see a restoration of “Santa Fe Trail.” Once a film lapses into the public domain, no one, including the original studio, will justify spending the requisite amount of restoration money on a property that any distributor can market and release at a bargain price (“It’s A Wonderful Life” is a rare exception to this rule because of complicated copyright issues). I learned this early on in the publishing industry when I was eager to illustrate book covers of the classics. It was made abundantly clear that no publisher was willing to pay my going rate on a book like “Great Expectations,” for instance, that, being in the public domain, can and is published regularly by scores of book companies, and is why you’ll generally see public domain art on the covers of those books. It’s all a matter of economics
I agree with you on the women in “Master of Ballantrae,” twin. While Miss Campbell looks more like a proper schoolteacher, Yvonne Furneaux verily sizzles. In fact (it’s official), Miss Furneaux was the most beautiful of all of Flynn’s female costars. And still living as of this writing!

I understand about the money issue but don’t understand how Warner’s let this happen to one of their films. Very strange. I wonder if she can be contacted so we can say hi and maybe get her autograph?

I just looked her up and found this on IMDB:
“She is now retired from acting and lives in Lausanne, Switzerland. [January 2005]”
I always wanted to visit that country and my previous employer’s said that of all the country’s they went to for yearly meetings that was their favorite location.
