Mystery Movie

04 May

I wonder what film Errol lost out on because of this injury. I found this photo on a site (address shown below)
I have no idea but this will be a good test for our resident Flynn experts.

Great question, twinarchers! I don’t know what film (if any) Flynn lost because of the slap in Nassau. (Maybe there’s a connection to Captain Fabian?) I do believe Errol put the money (~ $14,000) to good use, though – soon after receiving it, he purchased the Titchfield Hotel in Jamaica.

    news.google.com…

Errol threatened another case against the same guy (Duncan McMartin) for a nearly identical incident at the El Morrocco in Manhattan. Don’t know what ever came of that one!

      Hi all,

I think the movie was Lydia Bailey – actually made in 1952 with Dale Robertson

Thanks, Robert. That’s fascinating. I wonder if Errol told the court about Howard Hughes & Daryll Zanuck allegedly having a hand in that decision! – perhaps because “The Aviator” wanted to keep EF away from Jean Peters!

I believe the director of Lydia Bailey, Jean Negalusco (who directed the great Port Royal battle in The Sea Hawk, I believe, but was essentially removed by Flynn from directing Don Juan), wanted very much for Errol to play the lead. Word is Howard Hughes ended that (through Darryl Zanuck perhaps) via a phone call to Negulesco, who was up at Mulholland trying to sign Flynn. Needing privacy, Errol offered his famous bedroom for the phone call – and that’s where Negulesco was instructed not to hire Errol – in EF’s own bedroom!

          Dear Rob and Tim,

thank you both for clearing up another Errol topic. While I am not so interested in solving “the enigmatic Errol”, I have a knack for his biography and at that every eventual episode…I suggest you team up as the private eye and ear of the EF blog…
Greets and keep up the good work,
          Heinz

We really have some heavy hitters here on the blog. That is some detailed information that’s making my head spin. I always liked Anne Francis.

Thanks, Sir Shang! Robert is far, far, far more knowledgeable than I in the world of Flynniana. A true master. So, that’s an especially generous compliment. …

Even so, if we could get someone like Dorothy Lamour to work with us, we could form a Hope & Crosby-type Flynn Research Team. Then we could fight over Miss Lamour, instead of Errol! Wouldn’t that be great!!

Are there two Roberts on this blog? The Lydia Bailey comment was not mine.
