I get bored at work and to keep from losing my mind I search the net on all my interests. Last night it was Flynn and I was successful.
The first link is for an event that happened a few years ago but the article contains a photo that is huge, meaning of high quality (2.42mb!) and could be blown up to poster size. It is a shot from Captain Blood and I have never seen it before. I don’t find images that big very often. This one is not included in the photos posted since the file is so big so you have to go to the link. I hope you have not seen them. This always makes me think how many others there are.

Some really good photos there!
The Case Of The Curious Bride is a great watch,even though Errol is only in a flashback scene,but definitely a must seen for Errol fans,and the movie itself is fun too.Even better though is Errol in another Warren William movie called Don’t Bet On Blondes,Errol is terrific in it and his scenes are very nice and funny,plus he looks incredible as ever. ;) That one is available on a 3 pack Warren William dvd set. :)

Awesome stuff, tw! I wonder, though, how Cagney & Uncle felt about Errol reading texts during their conversation. Raoul loved Errol, but he always had to keep one eye open around the clock during their movies together. Especially difficult for him.

–The poster is by Italian illustrator Luigi Martinati, and having done much movie poster work myself, I can tell you that he was an immensely talented painter and greatly admired in the industry. He produced a number of other posters of Flynn’s films.
–The first photo is a candid showing Lili visiting Errol and Michael Curtiz on the set of the Taunton Hall court room scene in “Captain Blood” on August 9, 1935 at Warner Bros. studios. She herself was at the moment working on “Frisco Kid” on another sound stage at the studio
–The next photo is a candid showing the crew of “Captain Blood” filming at Three Arch Bay in Laguna Beach sometime between September 16th and 19th, 1935. Michael Curtiz can be seen in front of the camera looking up towards Flynn, Ross Alexander, and Guy Kibbee (the man in the white safari hat and jacket standing on the ground behind the camera is cinematographer Hal Mohr). I’ve attached a photo of that shot from the camera’s point of view, along with a recent photo of my wife standing in exactly the same location:

–The next photo is a candid showing Michael Curtiz on the far left, Ross Alexander in the center, Harry Warner to the left of Flynn, and other visitors to the set of “Captain Blood” during filming of the stockade scenes between August 12 and 21, 1935 at First National studios. It was during the stockade scenes that Flynn filmed his very first scene with Olivia de Havilland on August 13.
–The candid photo of Flynn in a tee shirt with Michael Curtiz was taken on April 14, 1941 at Warner Bros. studios during filming of “Dive Bomber”
–The next photo is from the makeup test for “Virginia City” taken on October 13, 1939 at Warner Bros. studios. The photo is displaying the beard Flynn was to wear in the tunnel scenes, the first scenes he would shoot in the film; the beard caused problems on the first day and had to be personally reworked by Perc Westmore, resulting in a 2 1/4 hour delay
–The next photo is a candid showing Flynn and director Raoul Walsh visited by James Cagney on the set of “They Died With Their Boots On” taken on the 21st or 22nd of August, 1941 at Warner Bros. studios. Cagney at the time was filming “Captains of the Clouds” (directed by Michael Curtiz) on another sound stage at the studio
–The next photo is a candid of Flynn with Flora Robson and Michael Curtiz during filming of the queen’s private chamber scenes for “The Sea Hawk,” taken sometime between February 1st and 3rd of 1940 at Warner Bros. studios.
–The next photo is a candid showing Flynn and Rosiland Russell filming in the clinic for “Four’s A Crowd” on February 24, 1938 at Warner Bros. studios; Director Michael Curtiz is on his knee at the bottom left
–The last photo is a candid of Flynn and Michael Curtiz taken at Warner Bros. studios sometime in May or June of 1937 during the filming of “Perfect Specimen”
Btw, twin, the film that is presumed missing is “Murder At Monte Carlo,” not “The Case of the Curious Bride.”

btw, finding that Capitan Blood poster is marvelous, tw, but, though I admire much of the poster, I’m not too keen on how Errol’s great facial features were altered & obscured. Maybe that was to appeal to a unique ethnic audience? Let’s face it, why mess at all with Errol’s unparalle, near-perfect 1935-era face??

By appearance alone (not mentioning other qualities), Errol should be immortalized as the ultimate male beauty. No one can even come close, present or past. Dare anyone to challenge on this front?

It would seem that the poster was to make Errol look “swarthy” and maybe a pirate “grunge” look? Interesting though as I’ve never seen that one before. Loving all these never before seen by me photos, thank you!

Love these….and that gown Flora’s wearing, wow. I think the texture and intricacy was lost in the filming it but how could you capture fabric like that…..great photos thank you!

OH and question for Robzak….the Three Arches Bay shot showing big camera crew during Captain Blood filming. See the bit of the white house in the left of the frame, above them? Is that house gone? Could you see it? I grew up in Laguna Beach, FYI….but never did get in to TAB (just a commoner…lived down the road across the street from Crescent Bay and also on Cliff Drive, near The Cottage…)
