“Looking at myself subjectively, I see myself, secretly, as a rather swell guy. Sure, I make allowances for myself. I find excuses for all the things I have done which I ought not to have done and vice versa. I can make the amends honorable (to myself) for all my sins. But outwardly, I can only see myself as a rather ludicrous poseur getting away with, simply, murder. How else can I explain my success up to now?
“I confess, I don’t take life seriously. I take life, if you ask me, as a very enjoyable joke. The most worthwhile things in life to me are its laughs. But because I choose to treat it as a joke doesn’t mean that I am not aware of the other side. I am also aware of the people who don’t take it as a joke because their self-importance overstuffs them. You see, I simply don’t believe that we are important, any of us. And an unimportant person can sit in the gallery and laugh his fool head off and have the hell of a time doing it. We only weep, don’t we, over tremendously important things? So, if everything, ourselves included, is unimportant, it remains to laugh.
“But I must confess that I am an extremely happy person despite my awareness of unhappiness. I am happy because I live in the realization of this moment. I have no future, nor any plans for a future. I don’t want to know where I am going to be or what I am going to be doing a year from now. I loathe routine. I detest clocks. I have absolutely no conception of time, and don’t want to have.
“I am fortunate in realizing that I am young. A lot of people don’t savor their youth while they have it. They appreciate it only after it’s over. I know that I am young now. I know that this is the time. I know that right here and now I am most keenly capable of zestful enjoyments, vivid excitements. I’m having them. I get everything I can out of each present moment.
“I think I can say, too, that I am uninterestingly without neuroses, inhibitions, or complexes. Even the best-selling inferiority complex is lacking in me. I’m not afraid of old age or death, much as I value youth and life. I’ll deal with them when they come up, not before.”
“I have the trait, childish, no doubt, of wanting to do anything I’m told not to do.”
“For the life of me, I don’t understand why a quiet, reserved person like myself should be involved in the news so much.”
“Life is not complete to me without a dog. I don’t know just what this companionship of man and dog really means. I’ve never analyzed it. I just know that I’m miserable if I don’t have my hound around. Maybe it’s because he depends on me for all of his good times. Maybe it’s because he so confidently expects that I will live up to his idea of me.
Thank you Errol. You are indeed one-of-a-kind!

errolsfan, this is a wonderful birthday commemoration card-comment you made for Errol.
I am sure he would be tickled pink to see all his quotes! I wonder if he would remember them all or just make new ones up as he goes along?
Thank you for a very thoughtful post!
Happy Birthday Errol it’s your 105th!

What a post! with all the quotes you have posted you get a real insight into Errol Flynn. He didn’t put constraints on himself and never liked them being put on him. If he was as happy as he said in one of those quotes it definitley had to be from living in the moment have tried this myself and it works. Way ahead of his time, that is the type of thing they teach you in cognitve behavioural therepy, happy birthday
Errol!

Fascinating collection of quotes, errolsfan. Thank you! … My sense of things is that Errol took life much more seriously than he publicly professhied. In actuality, despite how he may have said here and there, I don’t believe he saw life as a joke at all. Rather, I think he believed it was just too short & uncertain not to pack in as much fun, adventure & excitement as possible. Like many great adventures, he was also a pioneer & trailblazer. As daringthorpe says, way ahead of his time. All hail Flynn!

Happy Birthday Errol!
I posted above because I have been lamenting since re-discovering Errol in March that for such an intelligent, insightful, talented guy–a guy with zest, depth and intellectual capacity–his public image has long betrayed him to an extent it is a shame.
99% of those so-called his bios or commentaries on the Internet (based on what I have read) all portray him erroneously. What a shame! He was far more intelligent with depth than his public image.
Thus, I feel as his fans it is our responsibility to correct this DRASTICALLY UNFAIR mistake on behalf of our Errol.

A very lovely post! I am so glad that we are remembering Errol with such great joy. As someone once said “Life is not a dress rehearsal”! You have to live it good, bad and ugly – Maria

Willie Shakespeare surely would have loved to coin that dress rehearsal phrase, Maria, but likelywas waiting for people to forget his possibly conflicting line about “All the World’s a Stage”. So, he let Drake have it, not Sir Francis Drake, Drake Drake. In between the pastor from Covina did a whole sermon with it, back in the 50s.
As for the “Good, Bad, and Ugly” quote, that has to be by one of Clint Eastwood’s wives or girlfriends.

I just found this one–Errol at his own birthday party and happy.
So, “steal” it and copy to here for all to enjoy.
(Look at that enchanting laugh. Who can resist his charm even after 105 years later!)

That looks like General Taoe’s Chicken to me. Don’t know if I spelled that right?
Gentleman Tim
June 24, 2014 at 4:17 am
Here is the correct spelling, tw:
左公雞
Brutal General Tso would have definitely punish you significantly for that despicably unforgivable spelling offense. Perhaps some bamboo driven under the fingernails or the old water-drop torture. Or even worse, he might have forced you to watch a weekend of regional B-movies at the Hunan Province Peasants Theatre House – no subtitles, popcorn, or rice balls, of course.

I was looking up Errol’s past birthdays on the blog, and I was very lucky to find this collection of quotes.
It was a real joy to read this. It gives me greater insight into Errol’s way of thinking.
Thanks Errolfan1130!
