“Errol Flynn American”

04 Jul

In August of 1942, nine months after Pearl Harbor, Errol Flynn became an American citizen. In honor of Independence Day, here is some info on that internationally-reported event:

Australian announcement of Errol’s American Citizenship in August of 1942. Amazingly, the Australia Associated Press identifies him as an “Irish film star”! But, if you think that’s an egregious mistake, see the even more glaring (and hilarious)one about no more luxuries in the transcribed left-column headline!!

EF Declaration

Women all around the country celebrated, I’m sure – even perhaps the French one in New York Harbor:

Is it true Errol only became a citizen so he could keep his yacht?

I’m not sure anyone knows for sure, Lollie, but I think there may have been several factors that figured into his decision. One, as he said in hi MWWW, he was grateful to America for the wealth and international fame the country made possible for him. Two, maybe issues regarding keeping the Sirocco, though I’ve heard that may have already been resolved through corporate ownership. And, three, maybe war service issues? Also, he may have still been wary about returning to Australia??
