What do these songs have in common and what is their connection to Errol Flynn?

Well, Inga, to get this rolling, I’ll take three swings:

Amanda McBroom, David Bruce’s daughter, (co)wrote both The Rose and Errol Flynn.

John Ono Lennon’s “Woman”, Yoko, was born in Tokyo, as was Errol’s (much, much better) woman, Olivia De Havilland.

Black is white, and so was Errol – plus the metaphorically nautical lyrics of Wonderful Life could have a connecton to Errol’s own wonderful life.

John Lennon’s “Woman”: Born in Tokyo, 1933

Are all of the above answers incorrect, Inga, or just not what you’re looking for? (Of course we know the tongue-in-cheek answer to Wonderful Life, though true, was not what you were thinking, i.e. Black is white, and so was Flynn!)

Could have added that all three songs became hits in the Eighties, and could all categorized soft pop or soft pop rock genre.

No (co)writing Tim, Amanda composed that song alone!

Always so nice to hear from you, Tina. By use of the word ‘co-wrote’ above. I was only trying to convey that Amanda co-wrote her spectacular “Errol Flynn” (with Hanna Barbara’s Gordon Hunt, Helen Hunt’s father.) I didn’t intend ti include The Rose, which is attributed solely to Amanda I believe.

No shame in co-writing great songs , of course! – it’s been done by many of the songwriting immortals (even ones who don’t admit it) – e.g. Gershwin & Gershwin, Rogers & Hammerstein, Lennon & McCartney, among many, if not most, others.) The collaborative process of co-writing very frequently results in a better song.

    Hi Inga;
You are a tough cookie to say the least! I have absolutely no idea! The only thing I can think of that the 3 songs have in common is love and awaking – hope.
But I am sure you have other things in mind. I will keep thinking, maybe I need some awakening – ha ha.
However, I found an interesting fact about “The Rose”, by the way – a song I love.
Amanda McBroom’s “The Rose” is on the 69th place in the 100 best songs of the century. Also found out that she composed the song in 3/4 of an hour, Wow!
I am looking forward to the answer!
    Take care!

Well I didn’t have any luck connecting things the way I think it should be but enjoyed trying!
I did find out that Bette
And Errol were both born in the year of the rooster (Chinese horoscope), and pictures of Errol were incorporated into a Halloween party setting for her. Odd. Anyway I also discovered Blacks wreal name Colin Vearncombe was born in Liverpool as was John Lennon.

Sorry. Keyboard issues. I wanted to add that Errol and John
Lennon might have enjoyed each others company. Both came from obscurity to super stardom at a very young age and there was a lot more to them than people realized.

I very much agree with you, Maria! I think Lennon & Flynn (not a bad showbiz billing!!) were (are) kindrid spirits. Both from educated upper middle class, (pre)dominantly Irish families – broken families with fiercely independent mothers. And both had olympic-level creative talents and daring, poetic souls. … Don’t know if you’ve ever seen Flynn standing at the end of those ships he took to Europe back in ’33, but, stunningly so, Lennon could have taken his own late 50s/early 60s look Flynn’s three decades earlier. Errol looks like the first rock-and-roller in that photo.

No question that Johnny L knew Flynn well, too. In fact, he even once infamously lamented about his “Lost Weekend” in LA, that he couldn’t get way with wild nights out on the town drinking and fighting “like Errol Flynn” … claiming “those were the days”!

Thanks Tim. I was really into trying to solve Inga’s riddle and read a lot yesterday. If Errol had lived into the 60’s and we were googling today I can just imagine finding a photo of Errol and The Beatles meeting up somewhere!

Is that (really) the answer, Inga? Or, should we keep searching??

Well, I’m not sure how to respond to that, Inga! … A very interesting quiz, to say the least.

Then, if I understand you correctly, any and all songs written and/or recorded after 1959 have the equivalent connection to Errol?

… For what it’s worth, it was pointed out early on that these songs were Eighties songs – thereby confirming Errol never heard them – at least not while bound to this world.

Well, Maria, we did get to explore and discuss some fab Beatle stuff!

We did overlook Paul, George & Ringo’s slight connection to Errol, though! (No, not that Errol never heard them sing!!!):

Paul sang “Errol Flynn in a Tiger Skin”

George once dressed up as an “Errol Flynn-like swashbuckler” for a Magical Mystery Tour party.

And Sean was once Ringo, of course!

Good one, GT! Although technically Sean didn’t play “Ringo,” as the title was used merely to try to cash in on the popular Italian western character named “Ringo”! ( “Ringo” was a popular character in the same vein as”Django” and “Sabata”! BTW, Sean played Jimmy Travers, if memory serves, in a movie in which I rated in my article as “unwatchable” because every time I tried to watch it, it put me to sleep. At lease the Bayona twins, Pili and Milli were cute.–A. R.

Thanks for that correction, A.R.! Though a great Starr, poor Ringo gets left out again!

We should note that Pili and Mili later famously won the first Grammy Award for Best Lip Synching, though I somehow don’t recall them being quite as cute or attractive during their abruptly-truncated singing careers.

    Great quiz Inga!
Yeah – a real great prank you are mischievous as Errol!
You sure made us look for Errol high and low, great exercise though. I am sure as he is sitting on his lily-white cloud looking down on us he is laughing his head off!
    Great job Inga!
