Wow, no wonder they cast him. I just presumed it was because Errol and Bette were the studio’s two biggest stars. I was very thankful when I saw what Richard Dreyfus had to say about Flynn’s acting, especially when he watched “Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” with Bette Davis in her later years. The film ended and she exclaimed, “I was wrong! I was wrong about him! (Flynn)”

Yes, indeed. Petty Bette was very wrong about Flynn. Consumed by conceit and envy, she was never great enough to properly recognize nor salute his magnificence on screen. So bitter was Bette, she stupidly gave up Scarlett. Only woman in the Hollywood who would refuse to have Errol as her Butler. What a foolish move that was!

If Bette Davis Played Scarlett O’Hara: youtu.be/SlnCJqUt5vM…

Frankly, Bette, when it came to you, how could anyone expect Errol to give a damn:

^ lol! :)

E&E is one of my faves,Errol is brilliant, funny, tough & sweet in it.I love that movie, even with old bag Bette in it.

And Errol is just incredibly BEAUTIFUL (is it ok to call a man that?) looking in it.

Maybe that’s why Queen Bette decapitated him, Lollie – to save his beautiful head for all her lonesome (loathsomely jealous) self. She had none of the beauty, soul or humor of The Great Flynn:

That is such a great gif Tim,I love it! :D

And you said it perfectly, she was so horrible to such a lovely man as Errol. And it seems was the same to many other people she tortured with her rudeness when working with them, like poor Marilyn Monroe for example.I think a big part of it was that she was just jealous of beautiful people.

As an Errol fan,I’ll never forgive her for this (as we all know it was purposely done for real to hurt him) –

Yes, Lollie, a bitterly jealous person. What a shame she couldn’t be more generous with her compliments. Despite her own great talents and accomplishments, it only served to tarnish her own reputation.

Personally I can take or leave Bette Davis but credit where credit is due! She most certainly was an outstanding actress. She worked so extremely hard on her craft to succeed to be the award winning-actress as this was her passion and goal in life. One could go as far to say being a most successful actress was really her only passion, because her private life or just that of a regular human being lacked on warmth, friendliness and kindness. Whatever the reason only she herself knows. Maybe in this regard one should maybe feel sorry for her not to have ever dwelt or being able to dwell and feel the joy which when practicing friendliness, compassion and kindness can bring to ones life.

Her resentment of Errol stemmed from the sheer aggravation to her that Errol was not taking acting as serious as she did. Therefore in her mind he did not deserve the success he had and in her eyes that was a crime, which when ever she had an opportunity she punished him for it in any way possible to her.
One can see that in “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” and the story of “Gone with the Wind”. As the story goes true or not she sacrificed her own playing of Scarlett than give Errol a chance of playing Red Butler. In my humble opinion as great she was but somehow I could not see her to be a great Scarlett as Vivian Leigh was.
It is very sad but all the resentments and hate she felt in her life toward so many people showed in her face as she grew older.
But there is a small redemption existing of Bette Davis on a You Tube interview with Olivia de Havilland, which I once saw but unable to find, in which Olivia talks about Bette Davis.
It is well known that Olivia and Bette became friends after Errol’s passing, which to me is very odd but there you see that sometimes the oddest things can happen. What was it that drew these two actresses together to become friends? What did they had in common? Opposites? One kind and loving and the other….

Anyway, coming back to the You Tube interview, Olivia states that they where visiting each other and during this visit Bette said lets watch “The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex” I have not seen the movie since soon after we did it. The movie ended and Bette said: “I sure have done an injustice to Errol as he was really great”.
The two gifs I am posting shows their friendship and maybe one of you have seen this You Tube interview I am talking about too and can find it, which I have tried very hard to find and unable to do so.
The moral of the story, there is always light at the end of a tunnel!

That’s such WONDERFUL insight, Tina. Thank you so very much for that!!! I think you’re so right. Being a baseball historian, if I had to make an analogy, I would say Bette was the Ty Cobb of Hollywood actresses. So immortally talented, but so personally flawed. Cobb squandered much of his life (and credibility) jealously disparaging Babe Ruth, claiming he wasn’t all that talented and didn’t deserve the great acclaim he received from fans. IMO, Bette did much the same to Errol, with essentially the same goals and ill-motivations.

Here are a couple of videos showing some of the much-improved post-Errol relationship of Livvie & Bette. Livvie still obviously had a thing for Errol during these years.

Seems to me, as exhibited especially well in the This is Your Life video above, Olivia really worked extra hard to reach out to Bette and bring out the good in her. I must say, however, that, if Flynn had been attracted to Bette, we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
