A good Errol Quiz!

28 Sep

Errol had Family, Relatives, Friends galore and of course many acquaintances as we all know!
But who was Mike? That is the big question!

Hi Tina. Would it be Mike Romanoff?

Excellent, Maria! Friend and pallbearer, Mike Romanov*:

      * There were other “Mikes”, as well of course, e.g. Mike Curtiz, Mike Wallace, and likely many other Mikes, but I suspect also that Tina is thinking of “Prince” Mike Romanov, one of the most successful imposters in the history of Hollywood!

Hi Tim, you named some Mikes but sorry to say you have to try harder. Keep on going!
I don’t think that anybody believed him to be Prince but they liked him so they let him do his tricks. Furthermore, he spelled his name Romanoff with two ff. The Russian Royals from the house of Romanov spell their name with a “v”. No royals exist with double f, meaning an immediate give away..
Now go and find all the Mikes Errol knew well!

What probably helped Prince Mike the most, Tina, was that he could be counted on “looking the other way” for his celebrity clientele – manifested by this photo perhaps (something Sophia apparently hadn’t learned yet.)

Sorry to say NO it is not good old Mike Romanoff.
      Please keep trying!

Being that Mike was one of the most common names in Errol’s time & world – and that you’ve already rejected three good answers to your quiz – perhaps you may want to provide a clue beyond the mere first name. Errol likely knew many dozens of Mikes, probably even a few fenale and non-human ones!

You are right, here is a clue this Mike spoke fluently Italian and French but no English although being American.

Well, I guess that rules out most of the pets, Tina, except possibly a parrot or two.

Mike is a person and Errol was very close to that Mike.

Very good quiz, Tina! You’ve ruled out named for pets, but not pet names, which may be the key to this intriguing quiz, I suspect.

Does this relate to Patrice Wymore?

No – Patrice – not really but maybe in a remote way.
Nothing to do with any animal or animal name, I said it is a person.

By the expression “pet name”, Tina, I mean an affectionate nickname – like Honey Pie or Baron – which, of course, is different than a name for a pet, like Spot or Rover!! It was just a play on words.

I misunderstood – yes it is a nickname.

Shucks! I figured that with him having so many monkeys – supposedly over 1100 in downtown New York at one point – he must have had at least one named Mike. And, yes, I know some people don’t consider monkees people.

So, it’s back to the drawing board, Tina. What’s killing me is I believe I may have heard this years ago, but I can’t recall it now. … Mike? Very close? Hmm. This could take a while!

He looks pretty close to this mike, Tina.

You don’t have to, Tina. I’m not ignoring you – just still thinking! Also, I’ve just been very busy reading hundreds of pages of fascinating FBI records on Errol. Hoover & Tolson, who are specifically named and quite weirdly involved in hounding Errol, were really a couple of jealous creeps. I’ll make a report elsewhere when I get through it all – much of it is hardly legible and thus my study of it has been a bit slow-going. Finding Great stuff, though!

An American who spoke fluent Italian & French, but no English, Tina? And with whom Errol was very close?? Whom he called “Mike”??

Wow, that’s a narrow field! I can’t imagine many (adult) Americans who speak no English! Was this Mike a child? (I sound like I’m on What’s My Line?)

When you say “very close to”, do you mean as friends, or geographically?

    • Tina

      October 2, 2014 at 6:59 pm

You are getting close! Keep on trying!
      Not geographically!
Here is another hint – “The Garden of Allah”

      • Gentleman Tim

        October 2, 2014 at 9:48 pm

Well, let’s see, Tina! The Garden of Allah has spiritual, literary and cinematic connections, not to mention that one of Errol’s (in)famous Hollywood residences shared that name (rather blasphemously, some think!)

I doubt Errol called God (aka “Allah”) “Mike” (or even Michael the Archangel for that matter), but who knows! Even if he did, I do think God may have been fluent in English, as well as French & Italian, and possibly even geographically close! So, let’s rule out God (as an answer to your quiz, that is!) (Notwithstanding that God does have a few “books”!!)

I’m leaning toward an originally foreign writer perhaps, who lived near Errol at the G of A, gained American citizenship, but never did not learn English.

Please let me (and others) keep thinking, Tina! This is a VERY good quiz! Thanks.

        I vow to keep trying!

          You are cold, very cold!
I repeat the clues – it is a person meaning flesh and blood no god or archangels. The Garden was sometimes a residents of Errol at interval. The scene is at The Garden. The person is close to Errol and a book is in the play too and you could weave Patrice in it but very remotely.
I hope you get it now.

God’s not the answer, Tina?! Even at The Garden of Allah? Well, well, this must be really tough.

From your new clue, it sounds like the plays the thing (to concentrate on.)

Where’s the calvalry? I might be getting scalped soon.

Once you told me God was not the answer, Tina, I didn’t have a prayer. So, pray tell me who is this American Errol called Mike that speaks no English! For the love of Mike, please tell us!!!

                  October 5, 2014 at 5:17 pm

Here Tim is the answer to the puzzle:

The Two Lives of Errol Flynn by Michael Freedland, Page 225, 3rd paragraph.

The Garden was Arnella’s first American home, too. At the time she spoke perfect French and Italian, but no English. Her one concession to the habits of the Anglo-Saxons was to agree to be called MIKE.

Very good, Tina. One of my first thoughts when you mentioned an American who spoke Italian was that it might be Arnella, but it was very hard for me (still is) to believe that, living so closely with two English-speaking parents, she spoke no English whatsoever. And I would think she does relate pretty closely to Patrick Wymore!, so I got thrown off by that.

I didn’t recall that she lived at The Garden of A. By the clue “books”, what did you mean? That made me think it might be a foreign writer staying at The Garden.

By books I meant you would get the clue looking into an Errol book. I also gave you the clue “Two Lives”.
An American who spoke FRENCH and ITALIAN, but no English. Errol spoke both languages and Pat must have too as they were traipsing between those countries a lot, including England.

To give you an example, my daughter was for 3 months in Austria when she was 41/2 yrs.old. She did not speak a word of German when she left on her return she did not speak a word of English, but when one spoke to her in English she answered in German. Needles to say after two weeks of this game she spoke perfect English again.
Kids learn a language in a couple of weeks if immersed into it.

Therefore, Arnella, I would say must have understood English but did not speak it as they lived in Italy and France, what ever the case might have been at the time of Errol’s wandering years.

Very good quiz, Tina! I learned a lot investigating all the clues and going through my memory banks!! I did think by two lives you may have meant the Freedland book, but I didn’t. have it at my residence in Florida and wasn’t able to search it online.

Speaking of FLA, I might launch a Florida-related Flynn quiz soon!
