In the Company of Legends

12 Apr

I found an interesting post from Newsweek regarding a book written by David Heeley and Joan Kramer: “In the Company of Legends“.  Turner Classic Movies showed 5 of their biographies this past week.  Not included in the TV program, but in their book (I believe)  is a section on Errol. Excerpt:

Any examples of getting too close to the subjects to make your treatment balanced?

DH: Sometimes it’s tricky when you’re getting very close to the people involved. You don’t want to offend them but you can’t let that color how you tell the story. In the case of the Errol Flynn show we got very close to [his widow] Pat Wymore, who initially wouldn’t talk to anybody about him. Joan got her on the phone and that was the end of that [laughs]. Joan can persuade anybody. At the end of the phone call she said, “Why don’t you come down and visit me?” We were very close to Pat but we said Errol Flynn did not lead a life that was all hunky-dory. If we’re going to really tell the truth, we risk offending Pat. We talked to her and she said, “Just tell the story straight.” She knew who she was married to. So we did tell the story straight and she said, in the end, “Errol would have been so happy. Because yes of course we showed his flaws, but we also showed the world that he was a great actor.”

The Style Of Lili Damita and Olivia leaves town

31 Mar

I had commented on another thread respect a Baby shower for Sean. This shower was given to Lili by several Hollywood notables.  No photo unfortunately!

www.americanradiohistory.com…

Of course there was a description of what she was wearing:  An Orange Angel Skin Swagger Jacket with Gold Buttons (of course!).   I managed to find a sample of a 1950’s Swagger Jacket:

1950's Swagger Coat  But not “Angel skin”  and no I don’t think she skinned an angel to get it!

What I missed was the little comment on the same page noting that Olivia De Havilland had gone east (to Boston) for 6 weeks (this would be 1941) to recuperate from her Appendectomy that January. My female intuition tells me – “I don’t want to be here when the child is born” . I wonder.

Thanks to Tim for the additional information and photos of the guests at the baby shower too! The original post is under “Lost Brothers- In Memory of Sean”.

Errol’s Portrait by Boris Smirnoff

01 Mar

Hi- I am interested to know if anyone has ever seen these portraits?

“Flynn was a longtime friend of the painter BORIS SMIRNOFF, who painted his portrait several times, as well as those of Lili Damita, Patrice Wymore and celebrity friends such as Edward G. Robinson, Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer and Barbara Stanwyck.[42]”

(Napier-Ford, Noel: Smirnoff biography for Sir Peter Michael’s restaurant “The Vineyard”)

I have looked around the internet But I only ever seen the same comment respect Edward G. Robinson, Jean Harlow, Norma Shearer and Barbara Stanwyck.

But Beautiful….

09 Feb

I was so happy to see that Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga won a grammy award  last night with their beautiful duet album.  One of the songs on the CD is “But Beautiful” written (as the story goes) by Jimmy Van Heusen as an expression of his affection for Nora Eddington.    Sigh.

Honoring the Devil’s Brigade

03 Feb

Nothing to do with Errol but just wanted to show how proud I am as a Canadian that the past and  present members of the “Devil’s Brigade” will be honored today with the Congressional Medal of Honor.

This is for my American fellow-bloggers today!

Thank you!  Next should be the Order of Canada.

The 1st Special Service Force (also called The Devil’s Brigade, The Black Devils, The Black Devils’ Brigade, and Freddie’s Freighters),[1] was an elite AmericanCanadian commando unit in World War II. The unit was organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana in the United States. It fought in the Aleutian Islands, Italy, and southern France before being disbanded in December 1944.

The modern American and Canadian special operations forces trace their heritage to this unit. In 2013, The United States Congress passed a bill to award the 1st Special Service Force the Congressional Gold Medal.[

The Charm of Errol Flynn

29 Jan

I was curious about the relationship between Errol and Patricia Lake (The “daughter of William Randolph Hearst”)

This led me to a little story about Errol and his knowledge of parrots

30 Dec

I guess we could start a thread just about Robin Hood in his various forms!  I am having a bit of trouble adding photos -so I am just posting this way.

There must be thousands of items on the internet about Robin. I found yet another spot celebrating 100 years of baking (Robin Hood flour):

“One of the most visceral aspects of the company’s development over the years is the evolution of its logo featuring Robin Hood, in various incarnations.

In one of his earliest appearances, in 1910, he bore a passing resemblance to King Edward VII. Then, in 1936, a redesign gave him the plumage and dashing good looks of Hollywood star Errol Flynn’s portrayal of Robin Hood. – See more at: www.bakersjournal.com….” The Adventures of Robin Hood was not released until 1938- so now I am wondering if it is Douglas Fairbanks’ version of Robin that we see on the earlier flour packaging and on the side of the Mill in Saskatchewan.

There were also comic books put out during this time and of course I had to post this for you:

The Canuk connection!
