ERROL FLYNN TO LEAD LOAN PARADE

Hollywood’s most famous horsemen from their major studios will be in the line-up of the Sixth War Loan Parade Saturday morning in downtown Los Angeles.

Errol Flynn has been appointed honorary grand marshall to ride with Sheriff Eugene W. Biscailuz, who will head the thousands of riders.

Following the Sheriff’s Posse will be the following film celebrities heading various groups: Lewis Stone, Prestin Foster, Roy Rogers, Bill Elliot, Don Barry, Bob Mitchum, Hoot Gibson, Bob Steele, Bill Boyd, Leo Carillo, Charles Starrett, Johnny Mack Brown, Noah Beery Jr., and Mrs. Beery, Chris Pin Martin, Michael O’Shea, Big Boy Williams, Dick Foran, George Tobias, and Dennis Morgan.

Swinging & Dancing in Chico

Must have been fun, the party that the Robin Hood location troupe gave at Chico Saturday night. Members of the cast, the crew and some outsiders were invited, but when they got ready to dance, it was discovered there weren’t enough women to go around.

So Errol Flynn invaded the kitchen of the hotel and drafted 11 waitresses to join the party. Danced with everyone of them himself, too.

“During the Spanish Civil War, Errol Flynn decided to travel to Spain as an adventure, in his memoirs he tells that he met Estrella, his love. This documentary is the search for Estrella and all the broken love stories with the end of the war.”

Los Hijos de Errol Flynn will travel to the United States for the Hispanic Culture Film Festival in Saint Augustine, Florida. The festival will be held from October 4 to 6.

For Auld Lang Syne

Eighty Years Ago

Featuring Errol and a host of Hollywood stars in the 7 minute short For Auld Lang Syne,

James Cagney introduced himself and proceeded to identify the attending guests as they arrived at this benefit function, most of whom stepped up to a microphone to be interviewed on the radio by George Jessel, although the only voice heard during the “arrival” sequence is that of Cagney’s.

Cagney introduced Rudy Vallee as the M.C., and Valle presented the Benny Goodman Orchestra in a swing number and then introduced Dick Powell who sang “Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride” from 1938’s “Cowboy from Brooklyn.” Donald Crisp comes on and introduces himself as the co-M.C. and then he introduces Paul Muni, who makes the appeal to the theatre audience to make donations to the Will Rogers Memorial Hospital.

In order of appearance on-screen was: Cagney, Hugh Herbert, Glenda Farrell, George Jessel, Humphrey Bogart, John Barrymore, Bette Davis, Harmon Nelson, Hal Wallis, Louise Fazenda, Basil Rathbone, Marie Wilson, Freddie Bartholomew, Paul Muni, Errol Flynn, Lili Damita, Benny Goodman, Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, Dick Powell, Donald Crisp and Muni again.

Was Albert Einstein one of Errol’s amazing universe of friends? Absolutely, relates this relatively unknown account. Is this just Hollywood spin? An unproven theory?

Periodically, Einstein did circulate with a cluster of mega-stars from LA LA Land. But, in the orbit of Errol? For the reasons postulated? Improbable perhaps, but, as with all things Flynn, not astronomically impossible. Here’s A.E. with J.W., four years before Errol arrived from another world:

Dr. Flynn

Eighty-two years ago this week …

Eight years ago when adventuresome Errol Flynn, now Warner’s new film rave, represented the British Government at New Guinea, one of his many odd duties was to act as physician and surgeon.

When a native named Joe Speedie appeared at headquarters with a gangrenous toe as a result of having been bitten by a poisonous fish,it was “Dr” Flynn who performed the necessary amputation of the infected toe. The emergency operation saved Joe’s life.

Last week, “Dr” Flynn received a belated fee for his surgical gesture, a valuable gold-headed cane. Joe explained in the accompanying letter that he had seen Errol in Captain Blood and was most happy to have located his benefactor of long ago. And Errol’s quite proud of his ‘fee.’

It was around the middle of July, 1951. The peace talks began earlier and there was peace in the Kumhwa valley.
Instead of combat, everyone was talking about rotating home. There was also a rumor about a USO troupe coming to this forward camp. During combat, we would see entertainers of two or three hitching rides to the rest areas, rain or snow, to give their little shows. I gave them a lot of credit for their courage. Bob Hope was also here for the troops but he was 50 miles behind us somewhere.

On this July day, the entertainers in trucks and jeeps, came driving into this little clearing. A makeshift stage was built for the occasion. To our surprise, It was none other than Jack Benny and with him, in the group was Errol Flynn and Marjorie Reynolds.

This is the first time I’d ever seen movie stars in the flesh. For this country boy, I was fascinated and they looked so human and of course, they were. On the stage, Jack did his comedy of jokes and Errol and Marjorie acted their series of mostly funny skits, a lot of laughs for all of us.

Everyone was standing around intermingling after the show. I was standing close to Jack. He somehow looked smaller than in the movies. I slowly sneaked up behind him and sure
enough, I really was taller than he was!

Errol Flynn was walking by and I got this sudden impulse. I stuck out my hand and Mr. Flynn, can I shake your hand sir? He stopped, looked at me for a couple of seconds, smiled and said, My pleasure, lad, my pleasure. I think when he stopped and saw this oriental face, I can feel his uncertainty, but I think what won him over was this pure American slang coming from this face. He must have thought this guy has got to a real Yankee.
