How Did I Miss This? Dodge City Plaque for Errol Flynn!

10 May

I was on my way across the country from West to East coast about 8 years ago, and realized I could take advantage of the route to stop in Kansas at Dodge City, to take a look at what remained of the main theatre where Errol Flynn spoke to the crowds about his new film Dodge City, and a huge event it all was. I found the theatre, The Dodge Theatre, with its marquee down and laid inside the locked doors, and drove part of the parade route. But apparently, I missed something!

I did not find this plaque on the Dodge City Trail of Fame …

I found the boulevard where the parade was held that Errol rode a horse down and waved his hat to the heavy crowds on April 1, 1939. 50,000 people showed up for the film’s premier.

Three movie theatres were needed to meet the demand for the film. Errol and others spoke to the audience at the Dodge Theatre. It fell into disuse in later years, and the time I rolled by, it’s marquee was torn down as a hazard and laid inside the closed doors of the theatre. It was auctioned on eBay but a bid of $490 did not meet the seller’s price so it remained in the old movie house. There was an effort to restore it that came to nothing, as far as I can tell.

Quite a Turn of Fortune

As this is written Flynn is still a holdout on returning to the studio. Warners wanted him badly for Sister Act, but Errol was delayed two and a half weeks in getting away from Miami and, so far, he is refusing to give up his vacation. Quite a turn of fortume for the Irish actor who, two short years ago, was glad to play a corpse in the Case of the Curious Bride.

In Like Lynn — In for Flynn

24 Apr

April 26, 1938

Hollywood Citizen News

Warners are remaining absolutely mum on the subject of Errol Flynn, whose picture, Robin Hood, was enthusiastically greeted at a preview last night. Flynn, so far as known, is still aboard his yacht in waters off the Bahama Islands. Frank Heacock, a member of the publicity department who is with Flynn, has communicated several times with the studio, but apparently Heacock cannot get Flynn to say yes or no about returning for Sister Act.

It may be that Flynn thinks his absence speaks for itself. However, with the picture ready to start and the rest of the cast all lined up, a delay in production will be an expensive matter. If Flynn should return promptly, he probably would be forgiven and put right into the picture. But in view of the silence and his absence, naturally the studio is moving to protect itself against delay.

As a result, Jeffrey Lynn has been given extensive tests for the past few days, for the role that Flynn was set to play in Sister Act. Lynn is 27, and those who saw him on the local road show of “Brother Rat” will remember him as a member of that company. Warners were immediately interested in him and sought his release from George Abbott. He was brought into the studio last January, and has been going through a grooming process. His first movie role of any size was When Were You Born?, which has not been released. And he had the role of romantic interest opposite Kay Francis in In Every Woman’s Life.

If Lynn suddenly steps into the lead opposite the Lane sisters in Sister Act, it will be a very sudden leap up the ladder of opportunity.

Haven’t seen it anywhere, but methinketh the name “Jeffrey Lynn” was likely created to sound like “Errol Flynn”. His real name was Ragnar Godfrey Lind.

Cuba’s pre-revolution obsession with Hollywood cinema in the first half of the 20th century led Havana to create some of the most majestic movie palaces of their time in the Americas, where millions of Cubans spent their evenings gazing at the silver screen stars of yesteryear. One of those stars, Errol Flynn, Hollywood’s most famous swashbuckler, traveled to Cuba in late 1958 to overcome his stage a Hollywood comeback, but instead found himself in the middle of a real-life adventure more improbable than the plot of any film he ever made: recklessly endorsing the rhetoric of Fidel Castro and the soon-to-come revolution. Flynn self-produced a disastrous B-movie, Cuban Rebel Girls, and died soon afterwards.

Miami filmmaker Gaspar González finds in Flynn’s demise a fitting parallel to the end of Hollywood glamor in the Havana movie palaces. Although many of the great Havana movie houses are still standing, they are haunted by their long-gone heydays. With a detailed and careful eye, González reflects on the remnants of a film culture that so deeply affected and defined a nation’s collective memory.

Jan van der Vliet notices Errol Says MARVELOUS!

13 Feb

Jan says in the Adventures of Robin Hood, he notices Errol says MARVELOUS! And notes this is a word stemming from the 1300’s and not from 100 years or so previously (Robin Hood is said to have been born in 1160 …) And the word did not mean “splendid, very nice” (beginning in 1924 onward) but meant “causing wonder” as in a miraculous event. I am sure there are many other incidents like this in other films where the language used did not exist, but is used, and this one is caught by the eagle “ear” of our own Jan van der Vliet!

Robin Hood Hat! And Rory Flynn!

10 Feb

Rory Flynn showed me a hat that her father had given to her from the film Robin Hood, and has told me that the costume department had made two of them. Errol gave one to her and her sister, Deirdre, and Rory still has hers. Sitting on the couch in her office area at her home in North Carolina, she brought it out and let me try it on … The feather is long gone, but the hat fit us both! Here it is on Flynn’s head in this great looking candid …
