Curtiz call

12 Jun

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

the definitive behind- the- scenes book has seen the light.

My dear friend Ilona Ryder, a former teacher at the Grant MacEwan Community College, has made her promise true and wrote an intimate portrait of her grandfather Michael Curtiz.

For the first time using never- before- seen documents she lifts the veil on  this famous director`s family ties, trials and tribulations. Let me tell you this: he was a busy man!

Besides directing up to 175 films on both ends of the pond and speaking several languages simultanously, he constantly kept falling in love all over again. These liasions resulted in various children, who finally have a say in (t)his biography.

He managed to keep in touch with his loved ones, helped where he could during those dire times of war and never forgot his Austro- Hungarian roots.

If you like me are into cinematic anecdotes from an up close and personal view, you are in for a treat.

Mrs. Ryder interviewed many people over the period of 20 years (Lady Livvie being the most prominent of the lot) to add an angle to the film maker and family man who brought us Casablanca, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

There is some Flynn in, but as far as Lil` Damita is concerned… you have to see for yourself.

Get it here if you can: pagemasterpublishing.ca/shop/heres-looking-at-you-kids-michael-curtiz-and-his-hidden-families/…

Congrats,

Who May Olivia have Meant by This?

08 Jun

Harrison Carroll
Evening Herald Express

Now, who may Olivia de Havilland mean by this?

In an interview yesterday the youthful Warners star that she ‘could fall in love’ with one of the leading men she has had in pictures.

She insisted it was all theoretical, but Hollywood immediately began to count the lads over the fingers.

They consist of 5. The first was Dick Powell in A Midsummer’s Night Dream. The rest have been James Cagney in The Irish in Us, Joe E. Brown in Alibi Ike, Errol Flynn in Captain Blood and The Charge of the Light Brigade, and Frederic March in Anthony Adverse.

Even if she is just theorizing, Hollywood would like to know which is Olivia’s ‘type.’

Taking their cue from the success of The Adventures of Robin Hood, Warner Bros. are digging in making preparations for a sequel to be ready for release next spring. Title is Sir Robin of Locksley,, an original by Norman Reilly Raine and Seton I. MIller. Erich Korngold already is at work on the score. Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland are slated for the leads. Virtually all concerned in the scheduled follow-up contributed to The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Surely Alan Hale would have been in it, too!

Ronald Reagan: He is an actor who is interested in the welfare of actors and in their position in the industry. He has advanced from a supporting player to a leading man. He is always to know what pictures are being made at his studio, and when hears of any he likes, he makes a bid for it. He is very pleased that he is no longer told they wanted Errol Flynn for a certain picture, but that they are going to give it to him.

Smith Ballew as master of ceremonies on “Chateau” will introduce as his guests Errol Flynn, one of Hollywood’s newer stars; comic George Jessel, singer June Knight and grappler Man Mountain Dean. This in addition to Smith’s warbling and Victor Young’s music (KFL 5:30 PM)

“Chateau” refers to the Shell Chateau radio show. Smith Ballew was a very talented musician, who sang and played with many of the greatest musicians of the 20s and 30s. Following Shell Chateau, he became a ‘B’ Western star.

In Like Lynn — In for Flynn

24 Apr

April 26, 1938

Elizabeth Yeaman
Hollywood Citizen News

Warners are remaining absolutely mum on the subject of Errol Flynn, whose picture, Robin Hood, was enthusiastically greeted at a preview last night. Flynn, so far as known, is still aboard his yacht in waters off the Bahama Islands. Frank Heacock, a member of the publicity department who is with Flynn, has communicated several times with the studio, but apparently Heacock cannot get Flynn to say yes or no about returning for Sister Act.

It may be that Flynn thinks his absence speaks for itself. However, with the picture ready to start and the rest of the cast all lined up, a delay in production will be an expensive matter. If Flynn should return promptly, he probably would be forgiven and put right into the picture. But in view of the silence and his absence, naturally the studio is moving to protect itself against delay.

As a result, Jeffrey Lynn has been given extensive tests for the past few days, for the role that Flynn was set to play in Sister Act. Lynn is 27, and those who saw him on the local road show of “Brother Rat” will remember him as a member of that company. Warners were immediately interested in him and sought his release from George Abbott. He was brought into the studio last January, and has been going through a grooming process. His first movie role of any size was When Were You Born?, which has not been released. And he had the role of romantic interest opposite Kay Francis in In Every Woman’s Life.

If Lynn suddenly steps into the lead opposite the Lane sisters in Sister Act, it will be a very sudden leap up the ladder of opportunity.

Haven’t seen it anywhere, but methinketh the name “Jeffrey Lynn” was likely created to sound like “Errol Flynn”. His real name was Ragnar Godfrey Lind.

Wrestling with Lili

“Lili Damita has developed a sparkling interest in Man Mountain Dean – of all people.
Every time he gives forth in a local match, Lili can be found hanging over the canvas at ringside…”

Here is some Pathe film of perhaps such a match, a late 1934 contest between Jumpin’ Joe Savoldi and Man Mountain Dean at the Olympic Auditorium in LA. Anyone see Lili hanging over the canvas? Maybe she was studying some of Jumpin’ Joes’s famous flying kicks for her early dates and dalliances with Flynn.
