Hunting, Hawking and the History of His Hat

06 Jun

The “Robin Hood Hat”, aka a “Bycocket” or “Chapeau a Bec”

It evolved from a type of Medieval hat often worn by sporting men, hunters and hawkers included. The first artistic depictions of it appear to have been in the early 1300s. It appears to be most associated with dashing, athletic and adventurous young men, perfectly so for Errol.

Here is a superb site detailing its history in the Middle Ages, with an outstanding visual record.

Errol’s Peach of a Packard

05 Jun

Errol’s 1941 Peach Packard Convertible “Clipper Darrin”!

Like Flynn Himself, One-of-a-Kind. Personally designed and custom-made for him by the preminent Dutch Darrin, “Darrin of Paris” (located in LA). No identical prior or subsequent car was ever made.

It was purchased in or about 1948 by Tom Sumner, with it’s oringinal peach exterior and medium green interior. To his deep regret, however, Sumner sold it in 1951. Years later, he tried to find and repurchase it, but without success.

It apparently declined in quality, due to inadequate care and maintenance, was de-peached with (a poorly regarded) dark green metallic paint. Ultimatelty was either demolished, shipped to England, taken to Mexico, or otherwise vanished. It’s uncertain if it still exists, but it looked nearly exactly as the peach one in the photos below, which was built by Sumner (in the 90’s, I believe.)

Stuntmen, stand-ins and stooges II

02 Jun

Dear fellow Flynn fans,

here is the second standout stuntman who stuck his neck out for Errol. Scotsman and SAS captain Jock Easton, doubled in for Flynn in “Master of Ballantrae”, “Crossed Swords” and “Will Tell 1/2”.

Prior to that he had fought against German field marshal Erwin Rommel in the North African Desert and assisted the French Resistance behind enemy lines. After WWII was over he was awarded a military merit.

With ex-commando Joe Powell he founded the JES- Team and they would perform state of the art stunts for Gregory Peck in “The guns of Navarone” & Sean Connery in “The man who would be king”. Being parachuters they specialised in the perfect plunge. Furthermore Jock would receive the Stunt of the year Award for a “Frankenstein”-  film out of Hammer Studios in England of 1957.

But in January of 1954 he pulled the biggest stunt and it involved our Hollywood hero. All the frustration of the aborted Tell movie led to a blowout between him and Errol. Jock put in the first and then took the second punch. This gentlemen agreement settled the score and ended the argument on the spot. Shelley Winters had a ringside seat.

Enjoy,

Errol and Alexis- Good Friends!

01 Jun

Errol Flynn 2015

I think this was taken in 1949 during Errol’s filming of “That Forsyte Woman”. Alexis was filming “Any Number Can Play” with Clark Gable.  I only say that because I did find a photo of her from the movie wearing that same dress.  Must have been some funny conversation!
