Peter's E.F. Club needs to come out of the closet!

29 Oct

Hello to all my friends in Flynn,

Ernst here… better known as the purveyor of Peter's E.F. Club, a website I have been working on for the last year. For the past three years or so, I had been working on a Flynn film as a producer and writer, it was a film that would represent his last days in Vancouver in 1959. During that time, I collected hundreds of pieces of memorabilia for the purposes of research – books, movies, magazines, photos, posters, basically anything E.F.-related I could get my hands on.

For reasons I won't get into here, I removed myself from the project (which I think is still in development) but found myself left with all this amazing Flynn memorabilia, my closets had become a mini-museum of Errol. I felt it was a waste to have all this and not share it with the rest of the E.F. fans of the world, so I began to put together Peter's E.F. Club as a place to display it. I put in hundreds of hours transcribing the dozens of articles I had, and put together what I feel soon became one of the better info-filled E.F. sites on the 'web. I still have hundreds of photos and pictures I plan on uploading to the site, there just never seems to be enough time in the day.

But as I am not involved with this Errol film anymore, I have decided I cannot continue to justify the expense of this collection. Being a character actor, as I am, doesn't pay as regularly as some might think, and well, the bills need paid, so I have decided to put my collection on sale for serious fans of E.F.  I do not plan to make a profit from this sale, my hope is to only recoup my investment.

If you are interested in what I have (and you can get a pretty good idea by looking at the site), please e-mail me, and I'll kindly forward a list your way.

Thanks for the time, and for promoting my site…

Ernst

Hollywood's Hellfire Club – A Preliminary Review

24 Oct

By Prof. Lincoln Hurst

As promised, here are a few preliminary, personal thoughts on
HOLLYWOOD'S HELLFIRE CLUB. This, mind, you, is based on a VERY quick, preliminary reading.

First, on the negative side. The author seems to be a Hollywood beat reporter, not a scholar or a film historian. That was a huge disappointment to me. He begins his treatment of Flynn by applying to Flynn the dreadful Deitrich phrase, “Satan's Angel.” There are traces of Bret's influence here and there. The book is written in HOLLYWOOD BABYLON style, and focuses largely on the scandalous, the sensational, and the morbid. I had hoped for something more scholarly and less tabloid in approach; something like THE CASABLANCA MAN, or, in terms of Flynn's own life, your book, or Meyers's, or Valenti's. No such luck. The writer doesn't have those genes within him.

Nor could I could find one original fact or thought about Flynn; it is all culled from well-known, and well-worn, books and magazine articles, such as those by Meyers, and the autobiographies of Vincent Sherman, Rathbone, and a few others. The old Sherman story about the fake penis, Flynn, and Alan Hale (“I'll take a pound and a half!”) is of course trotted out. It's all pretty rudimentary stuff, and gives an overall tawdry impression of Flynn's life.

Flynn was, in short, a hellraiser, as befits the book's title. The author has totally missed the other Flynn, in my view – Flynn the quiet, reflective writer and percipient observer of life's drama, who is at the same time the acutely tragic Flynn. Had he dug a bit more, and not been so dedicated to shocking the senses out of his readers with morbidity and scandal, he might have found that other Flynn – at least a bit. The real Errol is notably absent here.

On the positive side, on a quick first reading I spotted only a few errors and mistypes – Aranella for Arnella (a confusion of Arabella Biship with Arnella?), the awkward and embarrassing running together of a long quote of Rathbone with the writer's own text (which should have been caught by an editor), the claim that Flynn wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered at sea off the coast of Jamaica, the getting of a few dates wrong, etc. These are only slightly distracting and irritating.

Also positive, the author doesn't have the Bret disease of putting his foot in his mouth on every page. He also doesn't seem to be enamored with the idea that Flynn was bisexual or gay. Generally the photos are okay, a decent selection, but the ones of Flynn are all well-known. There are a few photos of the other Bundy people I hadn't seen. I did especially like one – a full-page close-up of Phyllis Decker. She's nice to look at. I'd seen a photo of her a long time ago, which led me to believe she was a looker, and the photos in this book support that. It's hard for me to put her together with Decker somehow. There's also a great pic of Barrymore and Fields, in profile, doing a mock stare-down. It delightfully illustrates the opposite extremes that the human nose can take.

Anyway, for those who like to read the tabloids at the supermarket, or who loved HOLLYWOOD BABYLON, or who know nothing at all about the lives of Decker, Barrymore, Flynn, Hartman, Fowler, Fields, Mitchell, Skelton, Carradine, etc. – this will be the book for them. But for those who already know a fair bit about these people, and have read Fowler's vastly superior MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING, they will probably want to tear the cover off the book, frame it, and then throw the rest into the nearest trash bin.

Yours,
L

Flynn passed from this world on this day, Oct. 14, 1959…

15 Oct

Today was the day that was fini for the Fabulous Flynn… he would have been 98 had he lived a long, long life. But his short fifty years were packed with he experiences of two lives as he himself said. If you want to have a good look at how this day was spent read Tom McNulty's account of Errol last days in his wonderfully thorough Flynn bio, The Life and Career of Errol Flynn from McFarland and Company, published in 2004…

Flynn shows up in the most unusual places, I have noticed, on this day for me. This evening I was watching a film noir movie called Night and the City, starring Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney, two favorites of mine.

With Richard Widmark, in a clinch! Richard is a small time tout who gets in over his head and ends up of the target of Herbert Lom, a wrestling promoter in England who has it in for Widmark. Night and the City is a classic of its type and quite engrossing until its tragic ending…

And wouldn't you know it?

FLYNN inserts himself into the movie in the form of a billboard for Escape Me Never with Ida Lapino and Eleanor Parker!

Reminding me again that today was the day a drab world lost a bit of color…

Man in car accident while watching Flynn Film!!

Trucker watched Errol Flynn movie as he drove

By David Williams, Evening Standard Motoring Editor 07.06.04

 Add your view

A Spanish lorry driver who tackled the rush-hour on the M1 while enjoying a Western in his cab was banned from Britain's roads.

Manuel Cuenca, 50, almost sparked a pile-up as he drove through the early evening traffic with a portable TV and video flickering next to him.

He was soaking up a dubbed version of the Errol Flynn classic They Died With Their Boots On when he ran another juggernaut off the road.

Stunned fellow trucker Brian Jackson had just looked into Cuenca's passing cab in disbelief when the Spaniard suddenly cut in front of him.

He had to veer onto the hard shoulder on a packed stretch of the motorway near junction 23a at Kegworth to avoid a smash.

Leicester Crown Court heard how Cuenca was heading southbound on 25 October last year when he risked causing mayhem.

Mr Jackson was climbing an incline in the slow lane at the wheel of his fullyladen, 44-tonne lorry when he spotted Cuenca's red Renault HGV in his mirror.

Jonathan Eley, prosecuting, said: “There seemed to be flashing lights coming from the cab. As it came closer to overtake, and the cabs drew parallel, he saw the light was coming from a 14-inch TV mounted on the dashboard.

“The lorry then passed him and began to pull into lane one – forcing Mr Jackson to swerve onto the hard shoulder to avoid a collision.”

Because the hard shoulder on that stretch of the motorway was triple width, Mr Jackson was able to regain control and rejoin the slow lane.

He immediately contacted police, who caught up with Cuenca at junction 21a near Fosse Park, Leicester – with the movie still running. “They could see images of the film reflecting in Mr Cuenca's glasses,” Mr Eley said.

Cuenca – driving “very close” to the lorry in front – was ordered to pull over and was arrested. He said he was only listening to the film's soundtrack – a claim repeated in court by his lawyer, James Varley.

The case, Mr Varley said, had been “a dreadful financial hindrance and a matter of personal shame” to his client.

Cuenca admitted a charge of dangerous driving and was banned from holding or obtaining a licence in Britain for the next 12 months.

Judge Peter Morrell said it was plain the prosecution could not prove “beyond all reasonable doubt” that Cuenca had been watching the television, so his ban was simply for pulling in too soon after overtaking. If it could have been shown he was concentrating on the Western his sentence would have been “far less lenient”.

Cuenca, from Barcelona, has been sacked since the incident and is now taking German haulage firm Norbert Dentressangle to an industrial tribunal in Spain.

He could still be allowed to drive elsewhere in Europe if the Spanish authorities do not follow up today's sentence.

In February the father-of-one was fined £3,000 after entering Britain with four asylum-seekers in his HGV.

CBC Interview re: Cuban Revolution

29 Sep

Hello all:

My first time on this board, glad to be with you.

Thought I should let you know that I am constantly making changes to www.errol-flynn.com… and the latest is an interview on CBC's Front Page Challenge with Flynn talking about Castrol and the Cuban Revolution.

As well, under 'filmography' there is a new section; de Havilland on Flynn with several video clips.  One in particular is a charmer.

Have a look and let me know what you think, Andrea (Little Scout)

The Spam Monitor on the Errol Flynn Blog…

26 Sep

Chums! I have now been Spam Monitored at least twice on the blog, so please don't be upset if your comment post gets a spam notification, too! The darn thing is trying to do us a favor – even though it can't tell one of US from a stinking spam bot!

It seems the longer the posted comment is the more likely it will be flagged and then I must go in and approve the comment. In my other life (the one where I was not the Administrator of such things) I tore me eyes out if my comment was monitored in any way. How dare they? Land of the Free and Home of the Brave, after all! But this is just part of keeping out stuff about the joys of penis enlargement and what various ladies do on their webcams that don't concern us Flynn-o-philes!

Believe me, I have spent a good deal of time blocking trackbacks to Viagra sites and much worse… So please, be patient if your comments are moderated. They will get onto the blog as soon as I am notified there might be another posting for some unlikely products or services that are better left to the imagination…

From the Front…

19 Sep

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

Good morning!

Higham’s been showing up a lot, seemingly at my every turn, of late.  A short description of recent encounters, from the past two weeks:

1)      My new co-worker came into my office gushing about an “absolutely lovely costume drama” she had recently seen.  As she continued to describe the movie (she had missed the opening credits), I realized she had seen Captain Blood.  She wanted to know who the “gorgeous star” was, and when I told her that it was Errol Flynn, she turned the cutest shade of pink.  She then spluttered “But wasn’t he a Nazi and a rapist?”  I tried to set her straight, and she is now happily enjoying both MWWW and the first volume of the boxed set.  We have a new convert.  Hooray!

2)      I dropped in at a new Goodwill store in the local area last Friday night to kill time while waiting to meet some friends for a night out on the town.  While browsing the 3 for $1.00 book racks, I discovered Higham’s The Duchess of Windsor, marked down even further to half-off.  Part of me was tempted to purchase it, simply so I could immediately go and destroy it.  That being said, I’m not a big fan of destroying books, so I hemmed and hawed.  While I was debating with myself, an elderly woman came up, noticed I was looking at the book, saw the author, asked me if I was seriously going to buy the book, and then proceeded to explain to me how Higham was “scurrilous.”  As we chatted further, I learned that she too was a Flynn fan!

3)      The strangest encounter, however, has been in a film class I’m taking this semester.  One of the essays included in our textbook is written by Higham and Greenberg.  I realize that he has been quite active in academia, but it was just a bit startling to see his name listed there.

I hope everyone has been doing well.  I recently (FINALLY!) purchased the second boxed set and also finally sat down and watched the brilliant additional materials DVD from the first set.  It was wonderful to see so many familiar names.  These groups are filled with some truly kind and amazing people.

I must confess that I’m still confused as to why Dive Bomber made it into the collections.  I think it’s the weakest entry so far.  I hope a third set is released soon!
